Knife Edge - Two Piece (Henry Moore Sculpture)

Henry Moore sculptur has a great echo.

The Knife Edge is a reminder of my childhood when I visited Queen Elizabeth Park with my family. During the day when the sun was high, touching the hot surface and smelling the heated bronze, banging on it to hear its low echo. I never understood it as a child; I just thought it was a toy. As an adult, I still don’t understand it as an art piece. Still, five stars.

At first glance I was reminded of a Inuit Ulu. The sharp edges and hooked form give it a feel of an ancient skinning and gutting tool. Henry Moore was a British artist who found inspiration in the ancient Mayan sculptures and the works of Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brancusi. At eighteen years young Henry served his country in the Great War. He was one of the few who survived a gas attack in the battle of Cambrai. During WW2 he was recruited as a official artist and produced some emotionally charged sketches during the blitz bombings on London. Much of his works are closely associated with nature, the female body and landscapes. The undulating forms with piercings and suggestive hollow spaces are a reacuring motif. The original Knife Edge-two piece 1962-1965 is situated opposite the British House of Lord's in London. This replica was installed in 1969 at the water gardens next to the Bloedal Conservatory.
