In 1986 I received the RASC Simon Newcomb Award for writing in astronomy. In 1985, while writing my essay, I had a chance meeting with Dr. Willard Boyle. Both men came from Wallace, NS.Newcomb went on to become the head of the US Naval Observatory and a popular astronomy writer. Boyle received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 for co-inventing the CCD chip used in digital cameras. There is now a small park at Wallace Bridge dedicated to their memory.
