Centre William-Hingston
Centre William-Hingston was known as 'Hingston High' back then. It was William Hingston High School, a school in Montreal's Park Extension district. Located on 415 St-Roch Street and operated from 1973 until 1989.The school was named after William Hingston, a Canadian physician, politician, banker, and Senator. Born in Hinchinbrooke near Huntingdon, Quebec on June 20, 1829, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree (MDCM) from McGill University in 1851. He was elected Mayor of Montreal in 1875 and was in office for two terms. He was the president of the Montreal City and District Savings Bank from 1884 to 1896. In 1896, he was appointed to the Senate representing the senatorial division of Rougemont, Quebec. He sat as a Conservative and died in office in 1907.With the growing immigrant population in Park Extension the 1960's, English schools could no longer handle the growing rate of students. A new and larger school would have to be built. It was approved for the area and construction of what would be known as William Hingston High began in 1971. Two years later, in 1973, William Hingston High School opened to the first wave of students. In 1978, a newly elected separatist government introduced us to Bill 101, which among other things, would force the children of immigrant families and children of non-English parents to attend French language schools. This began the decline of the English school system in the Montreal area. With the declining student population in English schools in the late 1970's and early 1980's, the Montreal Catholic School Commission was forced to start closing English schools in the Montreal area. D'Arcy McGee High School was the first to go in 1981. It wasn't closed at the time but it was converted into a junior high school with secondary 4 and 5 students sent over to William Hingston. Next up would be Cardinal Newman High School on Christophe Colomb in 1982. Most of their students got shuffled around to other schools on the Montreal Island with most ending up at William Hingston.Even with the school mergers, the student population at WHHS was declining at an alarming rate and it was decided that it would also have to close. William Hingston High School as we knew it, closed after the graduation of 1989. The school existed for a mere 16 years. Some time later, the former WHHS was converted to Barthélémy-Vimont primary school and a center for adult education. Couple of years later, a library was opened then a pool was built for local residents by the City of Montreal. Many events and extracurricular activities take place as well.

I love this school. I like their interest in students. I am developing in French thanks to them, and I have come to love it, and I love Quebec very much.
