Big Pond Beach (Bras d’Or Lakes, CBRM) – Big Pond has a lovely sandy beach, quite popular with the locals in summer, a boat ramp and is home to many birds, including the majestic bald eagle and the tiny chickadee. Underfoot, watch for lady’s slippers and mayflowers, Nova Scotia’s provincial flower.Big Pond Beach has incredibly clear water that gets deep quickly and is usually calm. It makes for one of (if not) the best places to jump in the water and swim in Cape Breton. You can spend hours just diving underwater and becoming a seal for the day. For straight up swimming, Big Pond is the best beach on the Island. You get the added bonus of a great drive along Route 4 to get there. In addition to swimming, it is a great place to have a picnic with your friends and family, watch eagles and kingfishers over the lake and stretch out and relax on a hot summer day. Big Pond is an unsupervised beach.Big Pond Boat Launch - Public Baot Launch Ramp, concrete ramp, width 12', good condition, located beside Big Pond beach

I have been coming to the beach for over 20 years. I have a bungalow nearby. The beach offered a large amount of parking and a public boat launch previously, however when the restaurant/canteen was sold and made into a house/summer place the beach became more limited. The parking is down to one row and the property leading to the boat launch is private and you're unable to launch a boat without permission from the land owner. The water quality is always great, the temperature is comfortable and the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. The parking has become limited but the beach quality has stayed A1.The beach also has a large area of grass that is sensitive and important for the ecosystem of plant life, birds, insects etc. Be sure to clean any mess and not walk over these sensitive areas.

Nice beach, beautiful view. There was an odd fellow just sitting there staring the entire time though which made my fiance and I weirded out so we left because we didn't feel comfortable.
