Alavanca Calgary

For the past several years Alavanca (formerly MMAU) has been my home gym in Calgary, Alberta. Of the wide-array of Brazilian jiu-jitsu head coaches I have met, Tim Blanchard stands amongst the select few that encompass what it means to be a community leader, martial artist, businessman, and friend. In founding Alavanca, Tim has created a community for the diverse demographic of individuals and families that the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu tends to attract. His teaching methodology is capable of being grasped by all, and his knowledge and continued interest to learn and grow as a grappler himself, makes his gym one of the best places to take up Brazilian jiu-jitsu while in Calgary.

we visited this place for first time yesterday ! It was such an amazing experience. All coaches were very caring and professional! We were very welcomed.There were 9 coaches for around 20 kids. coaches paid attention to each kid specifically. I really recommend this place.

This is a wonderful place to bring kids to train!For people who complained about admin; Instead of email , stop in for a chat. This is a special place, face-to-face is of more value than emails and phone calls.Excellent instruction - firm and no nonsense, with lots of fun too. I can tell Tim and his team truly care ! So lucky to have Alavanca.

I’ve been training at Alavanca for two months now once or twice a week whenever work allows me to and I love it!Tim and his team definitely know how to create a great community for martial arts and are amazing at giving BJJ classes.Process is so smooth and the facility is just so nice, modern, all white and clean. They have shower and everything you need.Since I’ve been practicing BJJ, even if I’m still a beginner, I’ve gained so much confidence, balance and strength.First class is free so you guys go try and enjoy!

Alavanca is a great gym. I have been training here for the past 3 years ish. Everyone that I have met and trained with during this time has been very friendly and welcoming as I am aswell to newcomers. Without a doubt professor Tim is your guy when it comes to learning high level BJJ and is one of the best human beings I know. Every class I look forward to learning something new and seeing friendly faces. I highly recomend Alavanca for its community and instruction.

If you do BJJ and dont train here your missing out. Definately the best BJJ gym in Calgary. Whether your a beginner or a Pro the Atmosphere at the gym is very welcoming!

Bought a 10 pass for my wife for Christmas last year as she had showed interest in learning some muay thai. I decided to try a class with her as well. We thought it would be convenient as it is close to our house. However when we started looking into class times we discovered that most of the classes would not work for our schedule.We booked in for our first class and showed up 15 minutes early. There was a jujutsu class about to end before our class started. We waited for someone to come and help us as we had never been in the studio before. Someone finally approached us and asked us to wait for the coach to arrive for the next class. The coach never did arrive and we were told that the class had been canceled.We tried to book in and come back for another class the following week at the same time, as this was the onky time thst would work for our schedule. We were told that the class would start soon as the jujutsu class was just ending again. We waited around for 45 minutes, the jujutsu class never ended and nobody bothered to help us or explain what was going on.Both experiences were terrible, and a huge waste of our time.Since then I have called and complained about this numerous times and asked for a refund as we will never actuslly be able to attend a class, and we had 2 terrible experiences already and really had no interest in coming back. I've been told numerous times that I would be getting a refund but still have not recieved it. I spent over $200 on this 10 pack that I can't even use anymore, and I'm assuming I'll never see that money again.

We love the kids’ Gi classes - have been coming for a few years and Tom is another level of special! Coaches are amazing to my kids! Facility is fantastic. Non-pretentious.My only issue is the one coach berating his own son to the point of tears on the daily. I guess you find this behaviour in many sports, but I just couldn’t watch it any further.I feel it sets a poor example for families and kids in this environment.

Top tier gym with amazing coaches. Kids program is best in the city. Owner and head coach Tim is awesome and really cares about his students.

When we decided to put our kids in jujitsu, it was because we wanted them to be able to defend themselves and really cared about their development. We wanted our kids to grow in maturity, discipline, confidence as well as experience achieving goals that aren’t easily attained. We hoped for coaches and leaders that cared about our kids hearts, helped the grow in their weaknesses and build on their strengths. Alavanca has been all that we hoped for.
