I grew up at the academy of martial arts, starting when I was 6 years old. The next 12 years were spent with intense training, amazing relationships and several life lessons that I still carry with me today. In my earlier years at the dojo, I learned the importance of hard work and commitment, even as I child I saw how I was advantaged due to my experiences. Eventually I joined a long line of amazing mentors when I was given the opportunity to teach, which allowed me to advance my communication and leadership skills. I am honoured to be apart of such a supportive community which is the academy of martial arts, and I believe anyone and everyone will benefit from the guidance and training of Sensei Robert, and his dedicated teachers.

I’ve known Sensei Robbert Intveld for 35 years, I started when I was 5 years old and my family has trained and been involved with the Academy of Martial Arts. The experience I’ve had is priceless. The instructors train the students to have a positive attitude, have respect, compassion, gratitude, how to persevere, endure and achieve things you never thought possible. Without the Academy of Martial Arts my life would be quite different. There is no other martial arts studio I would recommend more.

Best Karate school in town. You won't find an amazing of place where instructors demonstrate such a profound understanding of Karate and teach the principles in such a detailed way. I have been a part of this dojo for over many year now and I have enjoyed every single class I have taken. I would definitely recommend this to any individual or family looking to have fun while getting a great workout!

This dojo is amazing and I absolutely recommend it! My family has been training here since 2014 when I signed up my 4year old son, soon my 7 year old daughter joined, then myself and even my husband followed suit. Competitive pricing and family rates make it by far the best value around for any martial arts training. In the past, I’ve trained at and visited a few different martial arts clubs throughout the lower mainland, and this place stands a cut above the rest. Sensei Robert Intveld and his senior instructors have exemplary standards. It is not easy to earn a BlackBelt at this dojo - but it is worth it! I earned mine at the age of 41 after 5 intense years of training and being in the best shape of my life. My kids have yet to earn theirs since there is a certain level of maturity expected and they have ways to go with their journey, but I trust when they do they’ll have developed such tenacity and sheer grit that they’ll be able to push through any challenges in life.People of all ages from beginning to advanced fitness levels are welcome and affirmed here. I’ve trained alongside preschoolers to seniors and learned something from each. From day one I’ve always been super impressed by the leadership qualities that young students possess here. As a mother, I’ve always appreciated that this dojo is a safe place for children to develop skills and confidence. Kids need to progress to a certain level before they are trusted with the option of contact sparring. The focus is not on competition with others here, it is on self development and becoming your personal best.The main style is Goju Ryu Karate, but there is such a wealth of experience amongst Sensei and the instructors in various styles including weapons, grappling/ground fighting, and practical self-defence; there is always something new to learn. Throughout the pandemic (and even prior) Sensei has kept this place immaculately clean and always in accordance with all of the PHO guidelines and regulations. I can’t say enough good about this place and the people in it; there is such a wonderful positive energy, sense of camaraderie and respect. If you’re looking for a place to get a challenging workout, have fun, learn new skills, and in the process surprise yourself by becoming stronger than you ever imagined - then this is the place for you!

Sense Robbert Intveld and his teaching staff are great leaders as well as community supporters. My kids were always welcomed and not only learned skills but as well as discipline and respect for others. This is also a great place for families to make long-time friends in the community for both children as well as parents.The Academy of Martial Arts has great pride in supporting all its members and their community. Sensei Robbert Intveld is an excellent instructor and phenomenal martial artist. I trained at the Academy of Martial Arts for over 12 years and my daughter trained here too. The energy in the dojo is positive as the instructors motivate and challenge students so every student improves and sees success. The training provided at this dojo leaves each student with a sense of belief in self.This dojo is more than karate it is also about building character with strong values. Discipline, courage, perseverance, and respect – all qualities that were instilled in me and my daughter through our daily training over the years. The lessons learned at the dojo have made me a better person.I very highly recommend this dojo for children and adults.

Since covid restrictions are eased now and Sensei started to have fun events like “Bring your friend” or “Be a black belt for the day” I decided to celebrate my son’s 7th birthday before Christmas.The party price is per child and no limited numbers, so I was able to invite close to 20 children’s including siblings raging from 3 to 12 years old.I brought in drinks, birthday cake, and ordered pizzas from the same building.There were more than 5 Senpai (high ranking colour belts) conducted and assisted the party. Everyone enjoyed 1 hour of fun games and exercises in the dojo followed by 1 hour of eating and socializing at upstairs space. It was fantastic experience.As give away gift, Sensei prepared invitation card for free trial class to come back.My son wished to wear a black belt in the future and tried harder to practice after the party!Thanks to Sensei and Senpai for great party and experience.What a great dojo to learn Karate and good positive energy to be around. My 3 kids enjoy 45 minutes class, 3 times a week! Good discount for family rate, if u have multiple kids or parents to join as well.
