One of the best shelters I’ve stayed in. While residing at horizons for youth I was pregnant. In my initial intake I did not reveal that information… And for a reason. When the staff had found out that I was pregnant I felt like the way they interacted with me shifted. It’s a good shelter to be if you’re not pregnant. I remember being in a meeting with one of the staff members and the manager and they kept trying to push a maternity house down my throat even after I continuously said that I was not interested, and that I don’t want to live in a maternity house I planned to get my own apartment. They did not respect that at all. And just continuously talked about how maternity house would help me with this and help me with that. Eventually the conversation got to the point where the staff had asked the manager if she should take me down to the walk-in clinic so that I could get blood drawn or P in a cup just to prove that I was pregnant. I Felt that her asking that in front of me or even behind closed doors was absolutely inappropriate. So I believe it was that same day or a few days following after that, that I had discharged myself; because that was my last straw. I do think they meant well but they went about it the wrong way. And for my mental well-being I felt it was best to leave the situation.. The meal plan could also change a little bit. When I say you eat the exact same thing every single day I mean it with my whole chest literally. And the food need seasoning

I looked for a shelter nearby to help me to unload my freezer from an excess of carrot and beets pulp I have left after juicing. Called in and spoke with lovely Muna who kindly accepted my donation and also thought it would contribute to healthy meals they cook for their residents. The building looks so nice from outside and all the staff members who met me at the door were very friendly and smiley, answered all my curiosity questions and were overall great people to meet. I wish more places like this shelter would exist and I'm sure they are doing a great job with helping youth.

I stayed here a few times in the early the 2000s, usually just for a couple weeks at a time while I was discharged from Covenant House. If you're used to somewhere like Covey you'll have to adjust your expectations a bit. The facilities aren't as luxurious, the food isn't as good, you have to do chores, and the sometimes indifferent staff WILL discharge people for stupid reasons. That said, I always thought Horizon's was a hell of a lot better to stay at than Turning Point, Eva's Satellite/Place, or Second Base (list goes on). It's located in a beautiful, quiet, residential neighbourhood with nearby parks and trails. It was always a welcome respite from the tumultuous street life of downtown. It wasn't overcrowded and the environment was rarely ever negative, it felt very chill to me. I have fond memories of meeting people in the little outdoor smoking area (I wonder if it still exists?), sharing cigarettes, life stories, and making new friends. I also remember blazing joints at Bert Robinson Park in the majestic autumn foilage -- 15 years later it's still something I think about from time to time. There's a positive side to any situation, the better you are at seeing it the better off you'll be, in my humble opinion. I wish you all the absolute best!

I have heard the many good things this organization provides for the community. The staff members do a great job at keeping youth safe, especially during Covid-19. All of my interactions with members of the organization have been pleasant and looking forward to getting a tour when they reopen for community partners.

Staff are amazing, if you have to stay at a shelter, I'll be honest, this is as best as you're gonna get in the city of Toronto.

I've stayed in 5 different emergency shelters in Toronto and this one is the best. Almost as clean as Covenant House and certain staff are twice as nice. It's small compared to Covenant House which I like. The location is nice and quiet compared to downtown, you just have to do simple chores and programs if you're there all day. I was busy with work so it was no problem, just did chores now and then.
