Went here for my birthday. It was great food and service. They have the original blend sake “Noukaya” was delicious. Overall The best sushi place in Vancouver!

I love this place. Try to book early to score a counter seat to watch Chef Masayoshi Baba prepare the Omakase meal. The Omakase is competitively priced for the quality of food (most of which is imported from Japan), the artistry of the Chef’s preparation and the well-coordinated service by the wait staff. If you have a special occasion, note it down during your reservation as they will do something special to acknowledge that day. Thank you to the entire team at Masayoshi for an awesome Omakase experience in Vancouver.

Masayoshi prices itself as a five star Vancouver sushi-ya. I'm not in the habit of qualitatively comparing restaurants in a review, but you can look at my profile for what I consider to be top examples of the style in the area. Let's start with the positives...We had an early seating for the nigiri omakase on a weeknight with the optional caviar course and a bottle of sake.Making the reservation and accommodating one of our party's preferences were handled efficiently. The food was beautifully-presented and the table service was warm and efficient. Now the drawbacks...We had two (of what I assume are rare) service issues that were discretely-reported but not addressed, which results in my rating:- We were over-charged for the sake. The price differential was relatively minimal (but in the restaurant's favor). We let this slide given the following.- A foreign object in one course was acknowledged by our server but then denied by the chef. At this price point, given the effort our party took to discretely report the issue, and the servers acknowledgement of same, it's inexcusable for the management to refuse to address it.

Very overpriced for what you get. Appetizers are not great. Chef and servers were friendly and welcoming…Our reservation was for 8:15. We were on time, the chef was not. We were ushered to a waiting table to get drinks started, which was nice, but I was surprised that we had to wait.I was really disappointed by the appetizers as they lacked creativity and flavour. Sashimi were not treated much (not kombu cured, aged, or marinated, torched, for example) nor were the garnishes (just aromatics sliced and served as is, or veg just boiled in water). Things that came with broth were bland. I understand natural flavours and am a fan of it, but the broths that we had tasted super watered down. They didn’t just lack salt, they lacked flavour and depth overall. There was a distinct lack of sauce too. The whelk course was the most disappointing. I love whelk for its distinct flavours, but this one lost it all when it was blanched in water. I kept wondering why it wasn’t blanched in stock instead. The sushi was good, but not the best I’ve had in the city. Though, the hand cone was quite good. I do wish that the fish slices were slightly more substantial, and the cone bigger. It would have been nice to receive a full size hand roll instead. My husband got the sake pairing for $95. That was really good.Kudos to the chef for the dessert course though. The hochija ice cream was incredible! The flavour came through beautifully and the texture of the ice cream was icy and light, like a sorbet. Underneath were deliciously caramelized pineapples that paired beautifully with the ice cream. I wish the same bold flavours and creativity was present in the main meal though. For the two of us, our meal was over $700. I feel it is much too steep for what we got. We didn’t leave full and felt like the ingredients weren’t treated enough. This is the 4th omakase I have tried in the city, and I place it at the bottom of my list and won’t be returning. Though the dessert was honestly fantastic, truly.

Spent around $480 w/ tip + caviar + Sake tasting + Beer + Cocktail for myself. Was the experience great value? No, it's super expensive and I'd probably not do it again. The caviar (while delicious) was definitely extra that I would not normally do.Do I regret doing it? No, it was a fun & delicious bucket list experience with great company. It's definitely a once in a life time kind of experience, unless money is not an issue for you.Just like all the reviews are raving, the sake tasting was worth every penny. The only advice I have is not to experience this at a table. If you can't get the sushi bar seat, I recommend that you wait till you can. Interacting and being able to watch the magic happen in front of you with all the other guests in a nicely lit sushi bar made the experience much much better.

Severely missed the mark for me. The chef was kind and the staff were also very kind. The food itself wasn’t up to par. It’s place is quite pricey. The quality of fish was good, I wouldn’t say it’s amazing. I think that a lot more could have been done with many of the dishes that were not nigiri. The lack of flavor and creativity was quite sad. The price point is not worth it.

I have went here for their omakase meal, the food is delicious and obviously pricey which is fair for the amount that they serve. The staff was friendly, but the chef lack interactions with his guest as he was burying his head in making the sushi. It would be a nicer experience with the chef could spend a bit more time explaining the dishes he is preparing and why he choose the specific piece could enhance the fine dining experience as we were all just sitting there watching him in the first place.

Honestly was a great experience! Everything was beautifully flavoured and fresh, and I really enjoyed watching the sushi chef curate every dish; he was so friendly, introduced the dishes well, and was just overall a cool guy. The ambiance of the restaurant was interactive and fun. Wish I knew more about sushi though for the price we paid.

Is this the top Omakase experience in Vabcouver? It's priced as such and while the service from the moment you enter to the dessert finale is attentive and entertaining, it's the food you come for and this is where I think Masayoshi could have done better. Each course was presented well and, yes many of the sushi were varieties I've never tried before. Nothing really blew my mind except for the bill at the end. And it's not the amount, since you should already know what to expect when you book here, it's the fact that I didn't feel the whole experience matched the price tag. Some fish were flown in, and so specific of the place they had a laminated slip indicating where the tuna originated. It was good maguro but I would have loved to try more parts of the tuna including the delicious otoro we were served. One downside was our addition of caviar ($60) which didn't offer great texture nor flavour to which it was supposed to enhance our sushi. One outstanding dish was the Japanese sourced Uni which, admittedly was probably the best I've ever tasted.A couple of sodas and a couple mid-priced sakes later set us back $550 pre-tip so closer to $650 for the twofer meal. And even tho I didn't pay this time (thanks to my good friend), I still felt slighted by the mismatch in price to expectations.Still, it was a fun place to experience Omakase. It may just be sometime before I give them another shot.(Edited to correct a dish we were served)
