Thanks to the help of a Telus health doctor, I was able to see dr Emes for an ADHD assessment. He was very helpful with explaining the resources on his website I should look at to help understand my diagnosis, and he made me feel incredibly validated. I've never felt validated by a medical professional before until both the Telus health doctor and Craig Emes came through for me. I will recommend him time and time again to many people who feel they need an assessment

I wrote to Dr. Emes asking if he had any tips or tricks to try to see a doctor and get a referral in the barren wasteland of medical care in BC. Got a form letter back pointing to his FAQs which tell you to “contact your GP or go to a clinic” to get a referral. When 1 in 4 people don’t have access to a GP and getting into a walk in clinic is akin to winning the lottery, this felt tone deaf and condescending. My message to him asked how best to try to ACCESS a clinic or doctor.Someone working within the system should recognize how broken it is and at least empathize with people desperate to try to get medical help instead of making them feel like they didn’t read the correct section of his website.

After some initial trouble with receiving the referral from my PCP, Dr. Emes eventually accepted me as a patient and confirmed my ADHD diagnosis (suspected by my PCP). Note that my doctor's office had to send the referral many times before it was accepted, so this was by far the most difficult and time-consuming part of the process. Dr. Emes was extremely kind and gentle to work with. He communicates clearly and effectively and walks you through the process step-by-step without being condescending or judgmental. He genuinely wants to help his patients access the support they need. Dr. Emes was also exceptionally helpful when I needed to make a follow-up appointment to complete various forms (like for StudentAid BC) to access institutional supports. I'm thankful for Dr. Emes' diagnostic expertise and kindness.

His whole Process was fantastic. As a person with adhd, you receive tons of reminders and notifications (which was great and needed) staff is very friendly and dr Emes is kind and patient. He also informed me that if what he was saying was too much" that he had tons of info on his page. All the info is well laid out and clear. Made absorbing the info much easier."

Incredibly dismissive and rude. Did not entertain the possibility of symptoms going unreported in my early years, nor the impact of current symptoms impacting my life at present. He took a cursory glance at my early elementary report cards and determined that there was no evidence of ADD in my formative years, and as such that my present symptoms were caused by something else. I expected more from a specialist than to rely on untrained teachers to document evidence of neurodivergence. Further, he did not accept the possibility that symptoms could have been overlooked due to other, more obviously troubled children in the class, or masked by learned coping strategies. My personal opinion is that he subscribes to an outdated mode of diagnosis which fails to account for the possibility of incorrect or undocumented symptoms in childhood. I will be seeking a second opinion, and I strongly suggest anyone who has been denied a diagnosis on the same basis do the same.

Dr. Emes was kind, patient, understanding of my needs for assessment and was able to provide in depth references for how to manage my ADHD. He was gracious and very knowledgeable and I felt comfortable with the conversation and his advice.

My entire appointment lasted 4 minutes. 4 minutes. Maybe I caught him on a bad day but the entire experience made me feel like giving up on even trying to get help with the issues I'm having. He basically told me there was nothing to look into due no symptoms being recorded as a child and wouldn't even entertain the idea that might be influenced by growing up in an environment and school system that doesn't even acknowledge ADHD nor was he willing to talk about symptoms that affect me currently and was only using the (I also think outdated) intake survey they have you take.

For a psychiatrist, he really knows how to gaslight and exploit those seeking diagnosis of ADHD/ADD. People with these disorders have memory problems, yet when you fail to contact your clients to remind them of their upcoming appointment, you blame them and charge them $250 for it! Congrats on being part of the problem and why so many people never get treatment.
