The place started off promisingly enough on my first visit a few months ago.Nowadays, I pick up a croissant on my walk to work, and two things strike me: one, that the quality of the croissant degrades every time and two, that the server just seems to hate her life and everything around it. Surely if she sees me a couple times a week a little friendliness wouldn’t go amiss. Or maybe this is a big, bad, Toronto thing.Either way, need to find a better croissant place.

I was surprisingly unhappy about my experience at this Bakery. I had they're almond croissant, which I have to say is probably one of the worst almond croissants I've had in Toronto. It was incredibly still, and the pastry had a texture as if it was made a day or two previously. The only redeeming quality was that it didn't have a ton of almond essence like some other poor quality almond croissants often do. I also had their famed Alsatian sourdough bread. I'll be honest, other than it's nice crust oh, it really didn't taste very different from other Bakery bought white breads. Another disappointment. The only thing that was at least somewhat good and worth purchasing again was their pistachio apricot tart.

Tried an “éclair” and was disappointed. The dough was very dense and not at all like pâte à choux should be. The chocolate was very sweet and tasted far more of just straight up sugar than anything else. Also the pastry tasted like something that has been sitting in the fridge for a while. We also tried a pear tart that was very basic and boring. Normally wouldn’t care too much but the price was over 15$ for 2 very subpar pastries.

Nicely flavoured sourdough baguettes and loaves. However, have to agree with some of the other criticism regarding the croissants. Dense layers of powdery pastry that crumbles. Also a distinct odour of freezer burn (and none of the delicious Maillard effect smell anyone would be looking for). If I had to guess, they have a prep kitchen they prepare and par-bake these at and then something is going wrong before they do the final bake. The chocolate has not melted or spread in the pain au chocolate, for instance, so maybe their oven temps need to be checked and adjusted. Might be down to one or two staff members not executing the bake correctly, which could explain why some people are having good experiences some of the time. It's a cute place in a nice location and I had high hopes but it didn't work out...

We were recommended by a friend and what a great idea to follow up on ordering here. Service and patience on the phone with their own recos were spot on to our palette. We ordered a beef dish that was insanely tasty and hit the spot. The donuts/beignets that were Nutella filled were so delicious as were the Lime and then Lemon tarts that were just so light and full of flavour. This spot you need to order when you have the chance.

I just got home, opened my bag and discovered that I was sold one half of a plain croissant this afternoon. My bad for not taking a photo- it's wasn't half of an enormous croissant- it was about the size of a deck of cards.

Such a great bakery with a delicious assortment of fresh baked desserts and pastries. There are savory snacks and bites too. I love to start the weekend with a chocolate croissant in Ramsden park which is just down the road. Definitely recommend treating yourself at Petite Thuet Summerhill.
