I graduated from Grade 12 at this school way back in 1954. It is so satisfying to see the superb reviews of the school because back in 1954, the educational programs and teaching were pretty meager: there was no science lab, no library (not even a shelf of books, no guidance counselor, but there was an industrial arts program, so in Grade 11 I took a course in cabinet making, and there was a home economics program for girls. To prepare for the government Grade 12 exam in biology, for which there was not a program of studies, the principal reviewed previous exams over a period of three weeks. As well, there was no gym, indoor sports being practiced in the nearby community hall. Our gym teacher, the industrial arts teacher, was a very affable man but he was not trained in physical education and sports. I would have loved a boxing program, but alas. A music program was introduced in 1953 or 54, so that was a plus and there was a school band, I believe. The very best teacher I had was a recent UBC graduate, Miss Betty Reilly. She taught English and French.I was admitted to UBC in September 1954, but I would not be admitted these days, based on the poor education I received back in the 50s. So bravo for all the amazing improvements over the years. I was in Lumby in the summer of 2002, but could not visit the school as there was construction going on. I was so disappointed not to see the physical improvements.
