This town is considered by many people in Alberta to be a fairly northern town in the province. However, if you look at the North-South median (centre) line on a map of Alberta you would see that Athabasca is actually just a few kilometers north of this line though it is about 150 km. east of the geographical centre of the province. It is located about 150 km. north of Edmonton, Alberta in the Athabasca River valley. The town is the county seat for Athabasca County and it serves a number of farmers in the area. However the town's largest employer is the Athabasca University which is Alberta's primary distance learning institution. The campus in town also hosts some limited on-site courses and training. The Athabasca River valley is a beautiful setting for the town though winter temperatures here can be quite cold, even for this part of the province. The river valley, in particular, can be quite cold in the winter. However, it's a matter of preference as to whether a person would wish to live here. The summers can make up for the winter cold. Long summer days with fairly easy access to several lakes nearby are a definite highlight of this community and it is a wonderful setting with good schools.

Athabasca is a good town because it’s has a farming community that has kept it going for years even though the town council has only catered to the University by closing down farm stores and bringing in multiple liquor stores , marijuana store , and wouldn’t let timmies or bp build down town but let a dump of a hotel be downtown that makes it very scary

On the way back from Slave Lake my wife and I decided to go through Athabasca. What a gem! It is a small town in Alberta that made us want to retire there! If possible, on your next trip, stop by and enjoy life at a more reasonable pace.
