I hired Martin to come with me to the field in Côte d’Ivoire to take pictures of the women, men and children in the villages where the VSLAs take place.Martin did an exceptional job in capturing the lives of these women and the changes the project brought them. He interacted very well with the rest of the team and he treated everyone he photographed or filmed with great respect and dignity. It really showed that Martin understood what development implies both on an economic and a social level.The photographs were amazing and my client was delighted to see these pictures in my final report. Besides the great work, I appreciated his extreme professionalism and his ability to work in difficult conditions. He was able to help me meet tight deadlines by demonstrating flexibility and adaptation to changing conditions. I'm a big fan of Martin's work, I have a few of his prints and I've also bought some to give as presents. His prints make great gifts!! Martin Broomfield was working as a photographer and infrastructure designer at the Abidjan Zoo in Cote d’Ivoire. It was a volunteer job like any of us in the team. I was doing my usual visit at the time and it was brought to our attention that over 641 parrots had been found on a truck and were being smuggled out of Mali to Cote d'Ivoire by a well-known poacher. They were brought to the zoo in appalling condition, 80% of them died. With other volunteers at the zoo, we had to rehydrate as many of the birds as possible. Martin was at the zoo that day and took many images of the staff as they cared for the birds. The pictures were very moving and were useful at showing the extent of the smuggling trade in Cote d’Ivoire. The images were shown to National Geographic and they were interested in printing/using the images on their website. For political reasons we were unable to do this. While taking the pictures, Martin worked with all the other volunteers under difficult conditions and took great care to ensure all birds were properly treated and demonstrated as usual respect and kindness towards the staff at the zoo when taking the photographs.We all felt very sad of the situation, but Martin always cheered us up with his kindness and professionnalism.
