Halifax Music Theory - Lorna Wanzel

Lorna has been my music mentor since the very beginning. I took her classes ever since I was a little kid and now I am going off to university. She always prepared me for any music examination at all levels. Lorna is a passionate teacher who takes pride and responsibility in her work. Her teachings have followed me beyond music and shaped me to be an organized, hard working student and learner that drastically shows in academic work.

When I enterted Canada I was looking for a great piano teacher for my RCM theory exam at level 8. Lorna taught me at MCPA and I could pass my exam with the score of 100 out of 100 and stand First Class honours with Distinction. All three of my children have had the pleasure of having Lorna as their teacher for music theory and one for both piano and music theory. What impressed us the most about Lorna was her ability to tailor her approach to each individual students' needs. She is not a 'one size fits all' teacher and is very quickly able to discern what will motivate a student, how best to help them understand, and most importantly how to set them up for success and to feel proud of their accomplishments. For this, our family will be forever grateful. Our children study music not for the sake of simply learning music, but for the many other life lessons that it provides - Lorna understands this and really supported my 3 children in their individual goals.

Lorna is not only an incredible teacher but a wonderful person. I have had great honour to study piano as well as theory under her tutelage all throughout junior high and high school. I started off as a late piano beginner in grade 7, and by the time I graduated high school, Lorna helped me achieve a level 10 piano ability as well as an ARCT Diploma in Harmony, Counterpoint and History. With great care and a focused approach, week after week, Lorna has helped me not only improved my piano skills but my ability to learn in all aspects. Studying piano with Lorna has helped me better my attention to detail, discipline for practicing at home, time management with other extracurricular activities and school work, as well as nurture my love for music and art. Lorna is also a very caring person, who is always checking in with her students' lives outside of music, and is very considerate of their mental health and well being. Lorna has taught me to not only be a better musician, but a better person and I will forever admire her for being such an outstanding role-model in my life.

Lorna did very well to ensure I was prepared and confident about writing my music theory exam while also sharing interesting facts and keeping the material fun.
