Dr. Gary. E. Bonn, Pediatric Ophthalmologist
Dr. Bonn has been seeing my son since early 2021 when we had first noticed the strabismus occurring in his eyes - he had just turned 3 at the time. He was very patient with my son, even when times were difficult as there were moments he did not want to cooperate to get proper measurements.Due to the on and off state of the world with covid, surgery was put off for quite some time. Finally when it was time for surgery, my son did not cooperate at all to get final measurements and we were then told we’d most likely have to see someone else as Dr. Bonn was retiring. We were so disappointed as we know from many other moms who’s worked with Dr. Bonn how experienced he was with this particular type of eye condition. He allowed us to keep an appointment 2 weeks after for another attempt with measurements - knowing he’d possibly only be able to pass those measurements onto the next Opthalmologist who will be taking over his file. We came in that morning and my son decides to cooperate but we were told Dr. Bonn was fully booked and set to retire in about 1 month. As we were finishing up and getting ready to leave, we were told, “a slot has just opened up for the morning of Dr. Bonn’s retirement - his last surgical working day at CHEO!”We we’re so overwhelming happy as we know how lucky we were to have this opportunity open up for our son. Dr. Bonn was so kind and reassured us every step of the way of the process. He gave me his personal cell phone number if I ever had any issues/worries before or post op.Surgery went well and my sons eyes are now perfectly aligned with no vision issues! He starts school this September and I no longer have to worry if this will affect his learning or possibly any teasing from anyone.Thank you Dr. Bonn, for everything!I do have to agree with a few other previous reviews here that one of his receptionist, is definitely not the most kind to work with. Absolutely no empathy/sympathy for parents who are emotionally stressed trying to help their children through a process like this. For that, I wanted to give a lower star review but I figured I won’t let the lack of her human decency tarnish the quality of care Dr. Bonn has offered our children in his 44 years of service. He deserves better than that.

Dr Bonn is great, his policies are terrible. Showed up this morning for our appointment but was turned away. My son has been seeing Dr Bonn for 3 years, i didn't have his health card with me, only a photo of it. I have done this in the past, but today they decided that it was their policy to not allow patients in without the card. Was then told that we will have to reschedule and will be charged $40 for the short notice change. Absolutely ridiculous. If you accepted a photo in the past why decide to impose your rules" today?"

Horrible first impression from rude receptionists, but that seems par for the course with other reviews. Dr Bonn was professional and skilled in interacting with my child. Horrible last impression from rude receptionists again, when I asked for an emailed appointment confirmation (to minimize contact in consideration of COVID-19) I got a blunt we don't do that" and silence. So I picked up the pen and the appointment card on the counter - more for them to sanitize later. Perhaps the gals at the front need to remember they run an eye clinic not the Queen's Museum. If you'd like me to call before I come in

Disgusting service. Infant children made to wait while Dr Bonn visits with his Grandchildren and while a guy came to look at his car". My wife and daughter have just left after waiting over 2 hours. One of his staff found it extremely funny that my daughter got upset after waiting so long. Needs to sort himself out and both he and his practice need to start acting with some professionalism."

I have nothing but great things to say about Dr Bonn and everyone in the office. My twin girls have been his patients since 2.5years old and they are now 6. We travel from North Bay and I would not have it any other way. He has always had a smile on his face when he sees us and we always get in before our time or shortly after the time. Keep in mind when they call you they say it could be up to 2 hours in office. He not only deals with patients in town he does have them out of town. I would HANDS DOWN recommend him to anyone. He's done 2 surgeries each between my girls and there have had no issue and healing has been quick!Words from two 6 year olds... He is amazing, he is the best, he's like family, he helped us see better, we're going to miss seeing him.

It took over 2 hours for him to see my son. This might aswell be a walk in clinic. Show up an hour after your supposed to and you'll still be waiting forever. It's not easy to keep your 1 year old busy in a waiting room that long. He just told me to come back in 3 months after examining my son for 5 minutes at most. Huge waste of time. Never going back.

A really good doctor! I understand some people gave him a low rating due to the wait time, BUT the reason why you wait is because he wants to make sure he spends enough quality time with each child and the parents and answers all the questions a worried parent may have. Please understand that. He is a very knowledgeable doctor with great experience. We'll be back for next check up and will bring our second child too.

My daughter was a patient of Dr Bonn's from the age of 19 months (she is 16 now). His demeanor with the children is lukewarm at best. Waiting times are horrible. Despite these shortcomings we continued all these years and even opted for surgery last year. The results were great. Today during a scheduled visit he was upset that I purchased my daughters contact lenses from another location. It was nothing personal but I have the right to shop around. The RESULT was a 3 min exam followed by dropping my daughter as a patient. He didn't even has the decency to tell it to my face, his receptionist did. Most shocking was he ended the appt knowing she had trouble reading the largest letters. He put dollars and cents before my daughter's well being. Gutless and unprofessional, Merry Christmas Gary

Wonderful ☺ Nothing but great service from Doctor Bonn. My 3 year old daughter is on a waiting list for surgery. Doctor Bonn has and will be following her until then and he will be performing surgery at CHEO. Waiting time is overall normal considering he's a specialist, it's very normal to have to wait.
