Recently (before she passed) our mother - Joyce Elizabeth Hopkins- moved into the Assisted Living portion of The Grenadier Retirement Home which, although not advertised, when the time came also provided pallative care to her.By policy, Grenadier believes eachresident has control over their own space, therefore it was possible for us to spend the night(s)with Mum in the unit. I believe this gave her much comfort. On move in day we essentially placed familiar items all around her, recreating the home she had left. Grenadier also wrote letters of support. These letters were essential in allowing my sister to cross the U.S./Canada border.Covid rules mandated that she stay in one place and that place needed to be with Mum. Again we were grateful. As for the PSWs and nurses on her team each and every one was both heroic and an angel. Not one sat down from the time their shift started until the time they left. Feeding (3 meals a day 1 morning snack and 1 afternoon snack), talking and checking in with every resident every day, taking residents to activities and back, laundry, exercise and a host of other responsibilities that happened on a daily basis I believe that if the PSWs were paid three or four times the wages they earn now they have truly earned every penny. These people are, after all, Grenadier's Front Line Workers. Honestly, having heard multiple horror stories of seniors in LTC buildings at the beginning we all had reservations. By the end of her time at Grenadier we all had peace of mind; knowing Mum had been well cared for each and every day, seeing the respect shown to Residents by all staff combined with The Grenadier's emphasis on activities, infection control and cleanliness meant a lot. Knowing she was safe, medically tended to and living in a clean environment gave us all tremendous peace of mind.I only hope a copy of this review finds itself placed in each and every one of theteam members' files that worked with Mum. We are and were well satisfied with the care given.(Joyce E. Hopkins residentA501 2100 Bloor Street West. March 'til October 2021)Joyce HopkinsDied and sadly mourned at age 95 October 2021).

My mother has lived at the Grenadier for almost a year. She had lived in a large condo building before, and enjoys having the sense of life around her as she walks in the hallways or sits in one of the lounges. At the same time she still has the privacy and independence that living in one of the Grenadier Retirement suites allows. We recently had a large family dinner in the dining room, and the food was excellent and the staff were attentive ad thoughtful (as the staff always is with my mother).

My grandfather moved into the Chartwell Grenadier's retirement residence in October 2020. He is 94 and losing his vision but he otherwise remains very self-sufficient, he was just ready for a little help. He has been very happy since his arrival. The staff are very friendly and all know his name. He raves about the food from the dining room every time I speak to him. It's wonderful to have onsite medical care when needed. The weekly suite cleaning has made life a little easier for him too. He loves the neighbourhood and really enjoys walks along Bloor St. W. in the nice weather. The team at the Grenadier has managed to adapt to the ever changing public health protocols to keep their residences safe during the pandemic and communication to residents and personal caregivers has been good.

Our mother has been at the Grenadier retirement residence for over 5 years. She is so well looked after in Assisted Living. I must compliment the recreation staff. They ensure that our mother participates in so many programs, singing, exercises, games, entertainment and more. There is a monthly calendar that is published so we know what our mom has been doing and we can talk about that during our family visits. The wonderful, enthusiastic and talented recreation staff ensure that activities are modified to accommodate each resident's capabilities. Having the residents so involved socially helps to keep them active and improves their mental health. Thank you so much to the management team for their support of the recreation program at Chartwell Grenadier.

My mother lived at The Grenadier from spring 2017 to summer 2020.Throughout that time her changing functional abilities were well accommodated by all levels of staff at The Grenadier, from dining room hostess to recreational coordinator. She moved from semi-independent to assisted living, with a 3 week interval at a rehab facility in between. Through the pandemic, and then palliation The Grenadier's ability to provide professional and consistent care gave our family a sense of security. When issues arose they were handled respectfully and in a timely manner. In considering all of the challenges for residents and families during this phase of life, we were happy with The Grenadier as my mother's home.

There is always something special about attending a retirement home tour. I walked into a beautiful retirement home in High Park area of Toronto. It wasn't the trees or walkway that made it special.. there was one thing that stood out to me...it was the residents. I walked into a home that was full of smiles. Every resident there was pleasant, full of life and was being attended too. This was my prelude to what was to come. It was refreshing to share a conversation with the General Manager Lucy, as we have the same values and beliefs. Luciana Vieira thank you for inviting me into your home. It was a privilege to see the magic that happens. The residence are truly blessed to have an amazing team that delivers quality care

My brother lived at the Grenadier for 3 years and I was very pleased by the quality of life he was able to maintain there. The general manager, Lucy Vieira, is superb. She is highly skilled, compassionate, approachable, and a great problem solver. Both she and many of the staff went over and above to help my brother have a good experience. The location is also exceptional. My brother loves nature and being outdoors, so it was ideal to be right across from High Park. He also liked having access to the shops on Bloor Street and quiet neighbourhood walks. Being close to the subway made it easy for friends and family to visit. Choosing Chartwell Grenadier turned out to be a great decision!

Our mother lived at the Grenadier for 12 years. She chose to move prior to Chartwell’s purchase of the location. At that point everything started to slip. It was evident that they were only concerned with profits over the care for the residents. The deck used by residents fell into disrepair but they built a deck that was too hot to use due to the sun position. It seemed that aesthetics were more important than functionality for seniors . There are too many examples to list.A few employees do a great job and genuinely care, unfortunately that doesn’t make up for many shortfalls that are caused by a corporation that is more concerned with shareholder returns.
