I had the misfortune to stop by this Church a few days ago during a long dog walk. I wanted to use the lavatory there, had a face mask on, had sanetized my hands as the sign asked of me and went in search of a body to direct me to the bathroom.I am 61, and although I don't really have a bladder problem or what they call UI, I stopped a woman that worked there and asked her where the bathroom was and she said that there were no public washrooms. I thought about it for a moment, this is a church right? A church that does not pay taxes because churches are open to the public and the public was walking in for a 6 oclock service and yet, I was being told that I could not use the washroom. So which is it? Are you open to the public or are you not and if not, then why do you get public funding to stay open just for a few people in the city of Winnipeg. I checked and they do not pay taxes under what is called the Nonprofit Tax Code Designation: 501(c)(3).it goes; Defined as: Organizations for any of the following purposes: religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition (as long as it doesn’t provide athletic facilities or equipment), or the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.I think it is long since time that Churches begin to pay their fair share of taxes.Either they are open to the public or they are a business and if they want to be treated as a business or private property, why do we give them the ability to skirt tax laws and not pay taxes.I wish I could say I was impressed with this church, on 1111 Chevrier Blvd, but if you can turn a body away that just wants to use the washroom because you are not open to the public then you should pay public taxes the same as everybody else.If a Church wants to be private and only for a select few people then they should be taxed like everybody else.Just a thought.
