Back Forty Artisan Cheese

What a gem of a place! Such a friendly and helpful owner kindly took the time to tell us about the fine fresh farm grown details within their menu. The chicken chimichuri pizza and charcuterie board were prepared quickly and were scrumptious. We enjoyed munching while taking in the picturesque scenery of the Mississippi River. The animals also gave us a warm welcome. We definitely recommend others to take the time to venture off the beaten track and experience this hidden gem for themselves.

The cheese board is a must try.The cheeses are delicious.I am a vegetarian so we tried the vegetarian flatbread and baked feta.Amazing food and views.

If you are ever in the area this is an absolute must visit. The whole property is beautiful, peaceful and overall such a special experience. The farm is family friendly with a great seating area looking right at the river. The artisanal cheese is by far some of the best I have had. The wood oven pizza and menu is excellent. My fave is the tarte flambe. This has become my Friday tradition as it never disappoints and is the perfect start to the weekend with good people, food, wine in the most relaxing and beautiful property. It is owned and run by a lovely family. Highly recommend.

Ordered on line and dropped by to pick up cheese this week. Definitely off the beaten path but well worth the stop. I have had the Highland Blue before and love it but was thinking that I needed to give their other cheeses a chance but really driving away thought why didn't I just get what I know I like....well the reason is to experience something different and wonderful. This evening I laid them out and tried each of them and to a fault they were sublime. Each has a unique flavour that honestly could become my favorite until I tried the next!This may be appropriately named Back Forty" because of the location the the cheese is definatly world class."

Back Forty makes great cheeses. That, on its own, would be enough to visit. Add in wood-fired pizzas and flatbreads, great charcuterie, along with local beer, wine and cider ... then you have a great destination. Finally, it's a really scenic drive to get there through the Lanark Highlands.

Truly a special place! Stunning location with such friendly people, a great all around atmosphere and THE most delicious farm fresh food. A must visit that you'll want to keep going back to....we do :)

I'm not one to post reviews normally but this was such a bizarre experience and no other review addressed this issue. It was shocking to see so many flies around the open kitchen and on all the food being used to prep meals. I get this is a working farm but if you decide to run a kitchen and serve the public, then you carry the responsibility to understand how to run such an operation. This means proper pest control, food handling and food prep systems in place. I am not talking about a fly here or there, but literally hundreds if not thousands that swarm all the prep food before being served. The staff and cook are somehow oblivious to the situation and think this is acceptable!*Update in response from owner* I can assureyou positive attitude was brought but my review is not about attitude. My review is also not about hiking or other parts of your business which I did not experience. My review is for your outdoor kitchen. Food was left uncovered. In specific, a bucket of arugula with no cover and zucchini cut then left on the cutting board with the prep knife, board and food covered in flies. Here's a picture of the zucchini, I'm counting 30+ flies there. My hope, and any patron's hope when leaving a negative review is for the establishment to own and take constructive action, not deflection. I like that you have processes in place. Perhaps some of them failed on the day I visited.

Honestly one of the best kept secrets in Ontario. Back Forty Artisan Cheese is a fantastic distraction from the every day hustle of city life.Jenna, Jeff and Beatrix open their family farm up every week on Friday and Saturday offering wood fire pizzas from the outdoor kitchen accompanied with an amazing selection of local wine and cider. Charcuterie boards of Jeff's award winning cheese are also of course available.Keep in mind that this is an actual working farm in the country. So along with the heritage breeds of chickens, pigs and cows, you may encounter a few of natures pests so bring some bug spray.

We went to the festival on July 2nd. We had a wonderful time. The music, food and beverages were great. It was a nice day to sit and relax by the water and listen to music being played. We are looking forward to going back. Thanks for a great first visit..
