When calling Veronica, we explained and clearly stated that my grandfather had Covid-pneumonia. We told her how we wanted to make sure he would have a nurse awaiting him at home as he would be released from the hospital on expedited terms as they considered him palliative care to our surprise. We did not want him left alone in the hospital due to his age, language and fear. She ensured us that she would have a nurse ready for that night with ease. One of her immediate questions after our second call which already seemed a little off putting was “do you know if he dies, you still need to pay my girls for the guaranteed 48 hours” I thought perhaps this was her way of ensuring staffing for her girls, however a very insensitive way to phrase it. Yet I still ensured her payment and signed and printed off the contract she emailed over. After being over 40 minutes late to her promised arrival time without any apology or call, we had called her ourselves to let her know she could now come at a new scheduled time due to an issue with the ambulance regarding his Covid. She suddenly said she had no idea about him having Covid which didn’t make any sense, as it’s the reason why we were using her services. We patiently asked if she was cancelling on us as we would have to look else where as he would be arriving within the next hour and she said no her nurse would be there. Meanwhile, less than 5 minutes before my grandfather arrived at home (now 10:00 pm), she had left us stranded without a nurse at the very last minute - after guaranteeing otherwise. My grandfather had 2 machines sitting next to him and no nurse now to hook him up or administer what he needed - my heart sank. As my eyes filled with tears and I asked her how she could do this, she coldly said she would not put herself or her nurses at risk of Covid as if it was lepercy. The first time she said she “misunderstood” which was on her, but the second time clearly understanding his diagnoses and still guaranteeing a nurse - there was no excuse. I kindly pleaded with her to call her nurses as the only reason the hospital allowed a same day release was that we had a guaranteed private nurse awaiting his arrival at home, as they had a shortage due to Covid. Which is why I made it clear to Veronica on our first call why it was crucial to have one - which she guaranteed.Veronica phoned me hours later to tell me in her exact words, she wouldn’t put any of her girls or herself at risk for a man who wouldn’t make it through the night. I couldn’t believe the lack of compassion - I asked her to please at least set up his machines - as she left us hanging so last minute no one else was available not due to fear of Covid but do to time. She refused and said words I will never forget “listen to me carefully, your grandpa is going to die tonight and it’s your fault. You should have left him in the hospital to die.”My grandfather thankfully got the help from a nurse, who showed up after we all spent 3 hours looking for one; to help him get through the night because it was last minute due to Veronica’s cancellation. All the nurses we called were assigned due it being so late in the night; but one out of the goodness of her heart finished at one house and came to spend the night with my grandfather. Oddly enough not one company said no due to him having Covid as they said this was the reality of their profession, however due to how late in the night it was.My grandfather is now out of palliative care, has grown to be stronger, no longer needs an oxygen machine or morphine, is walking on his own and is officially recovered from Covid healthy and happy. The fact that this woman told me he was going to die that night and left him alone to do so - was an emotionless, unprofessional and careless act.Without sounding rude, Veronica is definitely in the wrong business as she has no compassion. I only pray that she does not do this to any other family.
