Don’t get discouraged if ONA refuses to acknowledge receipt of an email or voicemail you send them. Document, document, document. Research ONA obligations online - their 2022 Constitution, their roles and responsibilities to members. Research what Ontario lawyers are obligated to do for their clients, and document the ways in which ONA litigation fails. I’ve been waiting 3 weeks for ONA to reply “received” to a request I made in writing. Icing out, ghosting, gaslighting tactics used by ONA….document them all. ONA has 68,000 members, and makes over $20 million A YEAR in dues, yet no formal organizational process to complain about a BUP, LRO, or litigator?… just send an email to some random general mailbox? That needs to change.File a complaint with the CNO if your workplace concerns are not taken seriously by ONA. File a complaint with the LSoO if you believe the ONA litigator is incompetent and dangerous to your patients. Document and record everything. Go to the media (I went to CBC) if your employer still continues with unsafe practice policies. Speak to other current and past ONA members who’ve had negative experiences with ONA; there are likely more than you realize. That was the case with me. Read the nurse reviews from all ONA offices. Some of the sentiments from past reviews is that “ONA works for the employer”. This is certainly true in my case. I was fired for advocating for patient safety and now ONA is refusing to acknowledge an email after 3 weeks. I was told by a colleague that once you stop paying the dues, you’ll never hear from them again. This is my experience. I advocated against my employer operating out of an office that is a danger to marginalized, vulnerable, rural youth. ONA facilitated it this unsafe patient situation. Continue to advocate for patient safety, no matter how unprofessionally you are treated by ONA.
