This gym is a realhidden gem among the bjj gyms in Vancouver. The main instructorBlair has a wealth of knowledge and there is a very friendly atmosphere with no bs.It's also unique in being of the few places in North America where you can optionally train sports sambo and wrestling techniques which is great for learning more of the stand-up game. I train at another gym and drop in once or twice a week and I am made to feel welcome here despite being a part-timer.

I have trained with Blair off and on for many years and have to say that he is one of, if not the best instructors I have ever had (and the other instructors are fantastic). He breaks down moves/positions extremely well so it is easy to understand and is so observant and finding the little areas the class is struggling with. The way the lessons tie to a bigger curriculum and the way we go back and review the last few weeks/months is so helpful vs. other instructors that blow through content and expect everyone to remember everything. Blair's jiu jitsu game is also so technically sound and smooth it is both artful and extremely impressive. Blair is definitely an intellectual strategist of bjj. The team environment at Matcraft is amazing with all great people and no egos. Blair really ensures everybody trains safe. I highly recommend training with Blair.

Blair has been my coach since I started grappling in 2016. I've been fortunate enough to learn, train, and compete with him around the world in multiple disciplines. I've trained at a few different gyms in a few different places and while I've had a lot of great teachers Blair is by far the best. He holds a super welcoming space, is very knowledgeable, and makes things very easy to understand. I always leave class feeling like I have learned something. Highly recommend training here.

I have been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu off and on for nearly 20 years, and Blair is the best instructor I've ever had. His way of breaking down the details and key concepts has really helped improve my game. It's amazing how in almost every class he shows a technique or emphasizes a detail I have never seen or considered.It's also a friendly and welcoming club to train at. While most folks are hobbyist and are there to learn and enjoy, there is enough of a competition mindset amongst the students to keep people improving.

So appreciate Blair's approach to teaching. As a beginner, I felt quite intimidated to start classes; however, as the coach he's cultivated a club that is so supportive, welcoming and encouraging. He shares concepts and techniques in ways that are clear and easy to understand. He's always happy to provide extra support/explanation as needed and is really invested in seeing his students learn and improve.

I tried doing BJJ before covid in Toronto and I found it really hard to roll with higher belts or more experienced white belts. Never felt like I could learn and actually get comfortable messing up.Blair and all those who have been training with him for a while at Mat Craft showed me that there are ways to learn BJJ that give you the room for growth, respect and comfort all while keeping the intensity as high as you want and need to keep you going and going time after time.I'm about 5 months in and as long as I am in Vancouver, this is going to be where I train. If you are curious about BJJ, I think this is the best place to get thrown into that world.
