Hatchet Lake Lodge
A five star review for a 5 star stay - I was lucky enough to enjoy this experience with my mom and the memories we created will be hard to top. Harvey and his crew at Hatchet Lake Lodge made sure from the moment we arrived, until our rainy day departure, we were treated like gold. The northern lakes of SK are beautiful and never more so than from the cockpit of the float plane piloted by Andy and in the boat with our fishing guide, Jimmy. These pictures truly don't do it justice. I'm an early bird - I'd say a highlight was having the fire lit for us in our cabin and coffee (with plenty of cream-thanks!) dropped off at 5:30 am so that I could enjoy the view from our deck and feel quite pampered while I got ready to head out on our fishing excursion. Access to kayaks, paddleboards, and a hike to the point to peek at eagle nest the while on the island was lovely as well. The fishing was actually catching" - pretty much every time I put my hook in the lake. Even a grand slam one day: trout

We had a great trip! My arm got tired from reeling in fish. I lost count after the first few hours, but caught more than 50 Northern Pike on the first day. Over the week I reeled in a 37-inch and two 40-inch pike. After a while, hooking 35-plus pike became routine. I also caught a nice 26-inch Walleye and a number of Lake Trout. The first day Ron took us to a great spot and we caught a pike on nearly every cast. My fishing buddy and I doubled up so often we stopped counting.Ron is a great guide and cook. Had unbelievable shore lunches of fresh pike, walleye and lake trout.Riding in the float plane was worth the fly-out fee, plus we got some great fishing at another lake.Food in the lodge was outstanding. Service was over the top. Every time I talked to a staff member they asked if there was anything they could do for me or my wife.I suggest flying into Saskatoon two days before the departure for Hatchet Lake. One of our Air Canada flights was cancelled the day before departure, and the others were delayed. At first, we had a 6 p.m. arrival time, which turned into a midnight arrival. We met in the lobby at 5:45 a.m. for the flight to the lake. Short night. Saskatoon is a beautiful city but we weren't able to enjoy it.The rates for visiting the lodge are a good value, considering all that is included. A four-hour guided fishing trip runs over $500 at Lake Texoma, but the Hatchet Lake Lodge includes the flight to and from Saskatoon, eight hours of fishing per day, plus all meals, cabins, and much more. The only drawback is poor cell service. We were able to make one call to the US and text messages often did not go through.

First time at HLL and it exceeded all of my expectations. The staff, accommodations, food, scenery, and of course the fishing were all exceptional. As an added bonus we even got to experience the northern lights on our last night. Will definitely be returning and would highly recommend to anyone considering it!

We had the fishing trip of a lifetime at Hatchet AGAIN. Our group of seven caught over 1000 fish in 4 days. Over half were over 30 inche Northerns and several were over 40 inches. HUGE Lake Trout and Walleyes were pulled in too. The accommodations, food and service couldn't have been better. The Staff at all levels were outstanding and genuinely seemed to enjoy being there and taking care of use. I can't wait until I can fish there again.

Harvey, Clay and the staff are so genuine and they truly are the heart of HLL. Customer service is their top priority and they worry about the details so you don't have to. We LOVED our stay and made a tonne of memories that will last our lifetime. Thank you so much Harvey, Clay, Chelsea, Wendy, and all the rest for an amazing 2022 stay!

Hatchet Lake Lodge is a gem. Bruce (fishing guide) had decades of experience. Not only did he know the lake's best fishing spots like the back of his hand, the shore lunches he cooked up everyday were superb. HLL staff were kind, patient, and attentive. They go above and beyond to offer a red carpet experience. Incredible food - I didn't realize you could eat like that so far north. Not to mention the cozy lodging and beautiful nature scenes all around. Still in disbelief I had the chance to spend time there. Kudos to all involved.

My Wife and I had an amazing experience at Hatchet Lake Lodge. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was going to be an amazing experience. From the hospitality of all of the staff to the amazing views from our breakfast table, we would highly recommend Hatchet Lodge. Our guide Billy was excellent and cooked us lunch by fireside every day! All fishing activities were well planned and executed perfectly. Harvey has put a lot of thought into planning a great Canadian adventure.

I and my dad have been going to Hatchet Lake Lodge almost every year since 1995. My dad started me fishing when I was just 4 or 5 years old. We live in New Jersey, and in those early years my excitement on the opening day of Trout season is one of my fondest memories of my childhood. In my early teens, we began to take fishing trips 2-3 times a year to upstate New York, the 1000 Islands on St. Lawrence River, for northern pike, when my thrill of fishing was again at a peak, especially with the prospect of putting a 36” northern pike in the boat, which we did several times each year. Then my career and family pushed fishing done on the priority list, but never off the list.In my late 30s, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal, of all places, about this fishing destination in northern Saskatchewan – Hatchet Lake Lodge. When I asked my dad if he’d like to go – he said he had just seen Hatchet Lake featured on TV on the In-Fisherman – and was definitely game. And so it began. The best way I can describe a trip to Hatchet Lake in a few words – “the fishing adventure of a lifetime.” My most fond memories of time with my Dad are from our trips to Hatchet Lake. But let’s first get to the fishing. I used to get excited on our trips to the 1000 Islands by catching 6-10 fish a day, and especially a 36” northern pike if we were lucky. And then there is Hatchet Lake. In my experience, a typical day at Hatchet Lake would be 30-50 northern pike per a day per fisherman, with 5-10 in the 36”-39” class, and a couple 40+ inchers. A typical day on one of the many Hatchet Lake fly-out lakes would be 50-75 northerns per day, 10+ in 36”-39” class, a good number over 40 inches, and quite often a 43-44+ inch monster. A really good day would be 100+ fish per fisherman. Our very best day ever was on Hannah Lake, a very popular fly-out lake, a day my dad and I boated 200+ northern pike, 13 over 40 inches, including a 48 inch, 30+ lb. monster for my dad. We’re not much into Walleye, but then there are the Lake Trout. Over the years, we’ve caught 100s of lake trout while fishing for pike. One day on Charcoal Lake, a fly-out, while casting to shore for pike with a rattle trap lure – I hooked and boated a 48”, estimated 45 lb. lake trout. A few years later, while trolling for lake trout, boated a 47” estimated 47 pounder. Until you see a fresh water fish that size come up come into view to be netted – you cannot imagine it. The fly-outs are a blast – a float plane taking just 4-6 fisherman over perhaps 2000 feet above the Canadian wilderness to a remote lake for the day. The only bad thing about fishing Hatchet Lake – it spoils you for normal fishing. But it’s not just the fishing. It’s the entire adventure. It starts with planning the trip. Getting your fishing gear ready – organizing carefully so you stay within the weight limit (50 lbs.) of the charter plane flight from the night-over city (now Saskatoon, once Winnipeg) to Hatchet. Then landing on a gravel runway in the northern Canadian wilderness. Then the first boat ride from the runway to the Lodge on an island at the north end of Hatchet Lake itself. The main lodge is great, cozy, rustic, big stone fireplace, built from logs harvested from around Hatchet Lake. A hardy breakfast gets you ready for a day of great fishing – at the end of the fishing day a wonderful gathering at the lodge bar to tell fishing stories of the day, followed by a sumptuous dinner. The guest cabins are very comfortable, also made of native logs, with wood burning stoves and nice hot showers.Last but not least. You’re in the Canadian wilderness. Bald Eagles – Bear (and cubs) – Moose - and Wolves. It’s humbling and thrilling. As my dad is no longer able to make the trip – my son and I have made the trip several times – and I plan to continue the tradition started 25 years ago.
