Was stoked to try this place out, left with mixed feelings. I'm sure the cocktails are delicious, but didn't try any. Price point of ~$20 was a bit steep. For food there were highs and lows:* tamale - this was weird. Not masa based, instead used sweet rice flour and A LOT of sugar. Served with a sweet mole was just sugar on sugar. One person at my table tried it with the birria dip and enjoyed that bite. It was too much like dessert for me.* salsa tasting - I'm glad I tried it. It was okay and priced well. I really enjoyed the two green salsas, the dry salsa and the black salsa. The red oil and mild red salsa were both quite boring. Definitely mild across the board (though I enjoy spicy)* raja poblanos - this was my favourite dish by far. Super tasty. Excellent balance of fresh corn, poblanos, cream, chicken, and cheese. Om nom nom. Only drawback was 2 tortillas was not enough.Others at the table enjoyed:* quesabirria (2 small tacos) - consensus was these were tasty but priced high at $7.50 a taco* coconut ceviche - stunning presentation. Tasty and would recommend.* mixiote - lamb cooked in a bag, opened table side. Looked amazing and the person who had it would highly recommend.* tuna tostada - 1 tostada for $12 seemed high, but they enjoyed it.* queso fundito - cute presentation, tasty, but quite oily and 2 tortillas was not enough.I would go back if they have some sort of happy hour in the future. But honestly we all joked about heading over to another place for taco Tuesday to fill up.

I recently dined at Milpa, and while the food was tasty, I couldn't help but feel like the experience was somewhat underwhelming. The restaurant serves small plates, which can be a bit pricey, but the flavors were good enough to justify it.The décor and ambiance are unique and refreshing, but the service was a bit overbearing. The waitstaff seemed almost too eager to move us through our meal quickly, which took away from the overall dining experience. At times, it appeared like they wanted us to hurry up and finish so that they could accommodate the next patrons. While the food was good, the portions were quite small, which added to the expense and left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied. Overall, the experience was decent, but I would not say it was extraordinary. So, if you're in the area and looking to try something new, Milpa is worth checking out, but manage your expectations and don't expect it to be a gastronomical adventure. The flavorful dishes and unique ambiance are noteworthy, but the small portions and rushed service make it challenging to justify the expense for a mere okay experience.

I was so looking forward to trying the food here, being from Mexico, I always look forward to trying the food of my people. It was good, the decor is beautiful and the staff is great and friendly. The coctail de camarón. Tasty, though shrimp was a little dry. We got some Korean crackers with it, which was odd with it. It seemed like it needed something more, avocado or something.Coconut ceviche was good, definitely a new take on ceviche, very soupy, it needed more jicama or something else.Pescadilla empanadas, were ok, very crunchy, definitely new, I have never had crunchy empanadas, anywhere.Quesabirria tacos were good.Rajas were good, I make them often, but I know they are better using corn cob instead of canned corn. The Frida cocktail was great, I tried the Paloma and I was sad it wasn't fizzy at all.The Tres Leches cake was so dry, we hiked about it perhaps it only had 1 or 2 leches, so pretty sad for that too.Overall, food was good, not in a rush to go back for a while, but I hope dishes get better as it's still pretty new. And, our server was amazing.

Great first visit at Milpa. Energetic ambiance + genuinely kind staff. We tried:1) Salsa tasting (4/5)2) Tres Marias (5/5)3) Coconut ceviche (5/5 - so creative! It reminded me Thai flavors)4) Pescadilla (5/5)5) Raja Poblanos (5/5)6) Quesabirria (5/5 - tasty!)7) Saturn cocktail (5/5 - very refreshing)All were very well executed with balanced flavorsOur 2nd visit confirmed the excellence of the restaurant. We added to our checklist the Cataluna75 and Felix Maria cocktails, the mixiote lamb and the panuchos. The ceviche and quesabirria were consistently good. We finished with the fruity Carlota de limon.3rd visit: A must-try is the chipotle capeado, absolutely fantastic... an explosion of flavours! Go for the manzana verde cocktail if you like the apple brightness.Summary: Milpa is perfect for foodies going on a date night. Vibrant and delicious.

It was nice to experience authentic Mexican cuisine that offers a different twist on Mexican food than other local Latino restaurants in Calgary. Overall, the food was flavorful and the waitstaff extremely knowledgeable about the menu despite the restaurant being recently launched. The Coconut Cerviche was a refreshing appetizer to start our meal. We especially enjoyed the Quesabirria and the amazingly delicious consomme! Highly recommended! Our group of three ordered two cold dishes, four hot dishes, and one dessert.A word of caution on the salsa sampler...the two spicy ones were too spicy for us even though we thought we had a good spice tolerance. The one extremely spicy one burned for a long time. The decor was very trendy and lighting was comfortable. However, the music was too loud for us to be able to hold a conversation. We sat at a table for four and we had to yell across the table the entire night.Being new, the washrooms were immaculate and so bright...which I appreciate! Make sure you lock the washroom door properly as one of the locks is a little tricky!

Good experience. The pepita’s salsa was great and even more the black habanero salsa, perfect addition for basically any dish. The coconut ceviche is a great vegetarian option and corn tortillas are definitely the best part of choriqueso tacos, the chorizo is well seasoned and tasty.Drinks are alright but we had a great time seating at the bar, very slow although good service in general, maybe an extra server would make the difference.

A unique experience, the food was great and beautifully presented, and the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Shout out to our server Carlos who was wonderful! The decor was very cool, and the restaurant was trendy and modern. Cloth napkins were a nice touch, would have liked tablecloths, too. The music was a bit loud for easy conversation, and a small but noticeable thing was that the chairs were uncomfortable for a 2 hour dinner so 4/5 stars for those reasons. But, I have to look for these negatives, there were many GF and VG options, everything was super tasty, and we would go again!

Milpa is at the top of my list for best restaurant experiences since moving to the city. It took about 20 mins for us to be acknowledged at our table when we first sat down, but as it's a brand new restaurant, that is popular and busy, we were completely understanding of this. The food came out quickly and was incredible. The coconut ceviche was my favourite of the evening. We ordered 4 dishes total and found that was plenty for 2 people. We were not a fan of the ice cream dessert we ordered, but I can't say it was bad, just not to our tastes. Our server was also super personable, decor was on point and 95% of the menu is gluten free!! Dinner for 2 (4 dishes, plus 2 drinks) was about $115. Will definitely be back! For things that were negatives"1. Food is way overpriced for size portions2. Messy dishes. Two were very soupy and could not be finished with the chips/tortillas they were served with.3. It was incredibly loud and felt like we were shouting4. Smaller space

Great dining experience! The food is incredible! We ordered Tres marias, beef empanadas, tuna taco, and queso fundido with a dessert called Carlota de Limon. We were celebrating a birthday, and they brought the dessert with a candle and happy birthday written on the plate. The environment was great. They had old Latino music on, which was awesome. The place is beautiful with arcs and lights in the hallways. Carter was a great server! My sister is celiac and had celiac options for food almost all the menu was gluten free. Also, non alcoholic drinks were available. Definitely cannot wait to visit again.

Overall experience was fine, if not underwhelming (given the hype). Decor looks amazing and the restaurant was busy. Service was normal. I appreciate that the chef(s) is Mexican and am so glad to have more Latin/Latin-inspired cuisine in the city. I enjoyed the flavours of the dishes, especially the coconut ceviche and the pulled pork open tacos, but there was something missing to truly make it a superb/elevated dining + food experience. As someone who does not mind paying for good food, the portions were genuinely, seriously, too small for the price. Everyone left hungry (and we are not huge eaters). I didn't like the Tres Leches cake; it was tiny, the cake was sub-par and the candy did not taste nice.
