I was part of this program in the spring/ summer of 2017. I have a mixed review of my experiences. The Good:My case worker was very supportive of me, even when I told her about my mental health diagnosis. She was very approachable, and I never had any major issues with her that were not resolved within a couple of days. You were trained on various basic certificates that would be very attractive to most employers, including WHMIS, basic First Aid/ CPR, and how to use various fire extinguishers.Various guest speakers came to talk to us, including a man from the city's HR dept., a woman who owned Wendy's franchises across the city, and a credit counselor. It was a very fruitful learning experience. The Bad:As a person with a documented mental illness, I am baffled to why it was hard for me to get a comparable position through this agency. In the past, I have used a private agency which specializes in getting people with disabilities, including the mentally ill, rewarding and challenging positions. While I did not get a job in Telecom that I wanted, I ended up getting a challenging position in a suitable work environment during the same amount of time for the private program than I got with AJC. The placement that AJC gave me initially was less than 10 hours every week, at minimum wage. My private placement was at a kitchen for 40+ hours a week, at just over minimum wage. Both agencies had the same amount of time, and the same individual government allowance, so why was this an issue?Another thing that I have a problem with is how some people who work here don't stay in their lane". I had one of the wood shop guys(I won't say which one) pulled me aside on a Monday
