Any visit to beautiful Nova Scotia should include a stop at the newly expanded Square Peg Gallery in La Have. Local artist Merydie Fjarley’s work is unique. Whether serious or whimsical it’s always creative and beautifully executed. This gallery is a great example of the cultural richness of Nova Scotia.

This gallery is a definite must-see for art lovers. Every item is one-of-a kind. You'll find necklaces that are statement pieces; multi-media art to hang on your wall - some created using hand-dyed silk fabric and the artist’s intricate use of found items and gold threads; and then there are the sculptures. These are truly spectacular, some of which are created from the found object that initially sparked her imagination, a variety of metals and the use of the ancient craft of gold thread work. Be sure to read the artist’s accompanying notes on her pieces to truly appreciate her creativity and craft.

Unique does not begin to describe the creative beauty of Merydie Fjarlie’s works of art. She practices the centuries old art of gold filigree embroidery, but her art is not limited to exquisite garments, for many of her creations are three-dimensional stunning executions, each more remarkable then the last. Here is a craftsman at the peak of her skill; an artist that can create with balance and an impeccable sense of form; an original creator who draws inspiration from a wide range of subject matter. You will see intricate flat work with textures achieved through a range of golden embroidery techniques; three dimensional whimsical sculptures that will make you smile, and elaborate historical pieces that pay homage to the roots of this nearly lost art form. Madame Fjarlie’s passion for life is embodied in every one of her creations. She also explores the functional; creating sensual fashion pieces that celebrate feminine beauty. Give yourself a treat and stop in to the aptly named Square Peg (round hole) gallery for a viewing and a visit with a remarkable artist.

Today we visited the gallery of Merydie Fjarlie. We were mesmerized. Sometimes she integrates medieval embroidery techniques using gold thread with objects found on the beach. Sometimes she breaks the rules and creates her own techniques. Sometimes her cloth sculptures are ethereal and could float away but are anchored to the earth by detailed metallic embroidery. She works with metal, cloth (or any other material) to express her deep understanding of moments in history. The descriptions of her work read like poetry and reveal her deep feeling for everything that she works on. Her topics are diverse and fascinating. She is utterly convincing in her brilliant three-dimensional depiction of anything that moves her. I highly recommend a visit.

Missed The 1:30 La Have Ferry back to Lunenburg but sure glad we did as it gave us a chance to check out the most wonderful gallery and meet the very generous owners. I will never forget the kindness they showed yesterday. Please check this place out if you are in La Have then stop at the bakery for a scone and coffee.
