Beyond the Giant
We spent 3 days at this beautiful retreat in mid July. First off, this is a nature retreat, there is little electricity, no flushing toilet and few mod-cons. If that isn't your thing, this place isn't for you.Bruce and Brenda are excellent hosts - on arrival Bruce gave us a tour of our cabin (Cedar) and the few nuances of the place. We were given a Walkie talkie for any issues - we had none. The cabin itself is amazing; we picked Cedar as it's on the beachfront and has a small beach and firepit which we used at every opportuniry. Included in the cabin is hot water, stove and fridge (via propane), composting toilet and all utensils needed for a short break. We brought our own food, there is little in the area so bear that in mind. WiFi and power for charging is available at the main office if needed.Arriving in July, bugs were a bit of a pain (mayfly on the beach in the evenings, mosquitoes always) but provided mosquito coils helped, and shops in thunder bay have them by the dozen. Bring them, if visiting in early summer. The beach is swimmable, but the water is very still in black bay and the rocks slippery; if you have reservations, there is a good beach in the park.Sunsets were phenomenal, sunrises just as beautiful. Even storms were awesome to watch from the upstairs deck.Lastly, the wildlife. We didn't go out of our way to see anything but saw deer, red fox and bald eagle on the road out or from the beach. Smaller animals in the park itself. If you're in the area and enjoy nature, I really can't recommend this place enough. Do yourself a favour and take a few days away from your phone.

A bit rustic. Very private and the fireplace works well.

Beyond the Giant
Beyond the Giant retreat is comprised of three beautiful log cabins nestled along the breathtaking shoreline of Lake Superior. Although completely off the grid, the cabins offer surprising amount of amenities with amazing hosts who have been very attentive and caring not only for the guests but also for the pristine natural environment worthy of preserving. Along with fantastic views of the lake, the cabins are an ideal backdrop for relaxing and quiet canoeing, hiking or to simply enjoy a morning coffee on the front deck or an indoor fire in the evening. This exclusive and exquisite retreat has not only met my high expectations, but has gone far beyond them. The trip up here ended up being one of my favourite summer getaways of all time. Thank you Bruce and Brenda for unforgettable memories. I’ll be back to do this again and again.

Stayed for two nights during mid September in the Cedar Cabin, and had an absolutely fantastic stay.We chose Cedar due to reading that it was the only cabin to have a firepit on the water and would highly recommend it for that reason too!The interior of the cabin was cute and cozy and noticably warmer than the air outside. There was a kitchenette with essential cookware eg: pots, pans, kettles, utensils as well as a gas stove/oven, small fridge, and fridge/freezer. The patio also had a small barbecue that we didn't use due to not planning on having access to one. There was a comfortable couch and a collection of books on lake Superior history and stories of people's travels around it which was a welcome suprise to the start of our trip! The upstairs bedroom loft was beautiful with a comfortable bed and balcony overlooking Lake Superior's Black Bay.The cabin was clean and came with a box of firewood and fresh drinking water. We were pleasantly surprised that there was hot water available in the shower, though keeping it at a comfortable temperature is challenging due to its limited availability. Overall still a plus when we were expecting pure cold water! The grounds of the nature retreat were beautiful with a few small roads separating each of the cabins, the main office/home of the hosts Bruce and Brenda. Exploring them doesn't take long but it's a very pleasant walk.Beyond the Giant is conveniently close to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and the hosts let us use one of their park passes to go into the park to see it's many hikes and lookouts.I would highly recommend Beyond the Giant to anyone trying to have a trip in nature while enjoying more comfort than a tent or trailer can provide at a great price!

Cabin was gorgeous. Pillows are well over due for changing. I suggest to bring your own pillows. The lake was very peaceful in the mornings.
