2/3 of the bread had mold the next day and the crust area was dry. The roll cake was good. Its cream was sweet and also slightly salty.

My father has always bought all kinds of things from this bakery and we loved it, until today. My father had bought your BBQ pork buns and he started feeling sick, and he contracted food poisoning. I don't think we are ever going to eat here again

Classic unpretentious Chinese bakery that sells mostly sweet and savoury buns, along with a few almost healthier, more Western" - albeit still soft and hamburger bun-like in texture - breads such as the multigrain or orange bretzel. Though they don't really have any more traditional or elaborate pastries besides egg tarts (sold out when I came in the evening) and a few cakes

I came in first thing in the morning asking if the BBQ pork buns were ready yet. They said they were in the oven and would be ready in 10 mins. Then I noticed that there were BBQ pork buns in the display case. When asked they admitted they were a day old but they were not identified as such and were asking full price. They offered me a 10% discount on the day old buns and said they would heat it up for me. I said no thank you . The woman at the counter seemed to be annoyed at my attitude.

The name choice (Deer Island Bakery) is interesting. Honestly, we have visited the place many times, however, only when I took pictures found out what the name was. Point is, the name is irrelevant. This bakery on W51st Ave. in Kerrisdale has been around several years and it continues to attract a steady, and loyal, clientele. The place is relatively small but well organized, with fridges for cakes, and shelves with the different baked goods they offer, among these: cookies, pastries, buns with sweet & savoury fillings, loafs of bread, all fresh! If you like egg tarts, don't miss the opportunity to get some! The flaky cup and mildly sweet egg top an awesome combination! Their prices are pretty decent, and their service is diligent and courteous. Bring your face mask, apply hand sanitizer (provided at point of entry) and enjoy!

Many breads seen from the outside of the store and they looked very nice. That was my first impression before I entered the store. Once I stepped into the bakery I figured out that they had so many kinds of bread not only near the entrance but back of the store. All breads are reasonable prices and they are yummy! My favorite one is Pineapple BBQ Pork Bun.

I bought 6 items to order without tax and this is what I would rate each item.Green bean pineapple bun - 3/5. The pineapple bun part itself was amazing - the bread texture was good and the crust was not too sweet. But it barely had any green bean filling and I had to eat half of the bun before I found any. The bean paste was really smooth and good tho.Red bean pineapple bun - 2.7/5. As I said before, the pineapple bun part itself is really good. But it barely had even a tablespoon of red bean filling despite the size of the bun, and the filling lacked red bean flavour.Lemon bun - 2.5/5. The bread texture was OK and it was mildly sweet but lacked lemon flavour. There is a lemon drizzle over top but it tastes like a regular bun on the first bite and I had to chew multiple times before I could taste any lemon flavour or sweetness.Snow milky - 2.5/5. It looks like a chocolate almond croissant but it isn’t. The bread texture is completely different from that of a croissant- there are layers but there is no flakiness and the bread seems like it was meant to just be soft. Tbh I didn’t think this kind of texture was that great. The toppings that they put on top didn’t add any flavour or sweetness and there wasn’t any filling inside so the bread was tasteless.Dirty chocolate croissant - 2/5. The main reason I came to this bakery was because of this bread - it’s like a croissant coated with a chocolatey outer layer with chocolate bits inside. The bread texture was similar to the snow milky, which I wasn’t a big fan of. Although you can definitely taste the chocolate parts, the bread itself was tasteless and lacked sweetness.Overall, I think this bakery does their pineapple buns really well, although the special ones lack filling. I would probably come back just to buy their original pineapple buns (only $1.50!) and add my own fillings to them at home. This bakery has a unique selection of items compared to other Asian bakeries, but I wish that they could add more flavour to their buns and/ or work on their bread texture. The sweetest & most umami bun out of the 6 buns I bought were their pineapple buns.UPDATE: I have tried pineapple buns from other bakeries around the area. I must say that they are much better in quality, actually have filling, and around the same price. I would not bother to visit again, even for the pineapple buns

Perfect place for birthday gifts, family reunions, snack shopping and a quick breakfast. I purchased this combo for my lovely landlord and she loved it. Ingredients are very natural and real, plus many years of expertise (equipment, craftsmanship) and a variety of products (less sugar, gluten free, non baked etc).

Was scrambling a bit to look for a birthday cake for my wife. After been out of town and on an Easter Monday. Googled for a cake shop and bakery in the Kerrisdale area. My first choice was Michele Cake Shop but it is closed on Mondays. I am glad I stumbled on to Deer Island Bakery. Good selection of cakes though on the smaller side. The lady there was very helpful and even advised me that there is a savings on cakes all this month. I would not have known this since I didn't see the sign on the front of the store. She offered a free birthday sign" on the cake and was super careful in putting and the cake in the box. The mango cake was a hit with our family. Will go back again."
