Audi Edmonton North

I don’t even know where to start with this review. I owned an Audi A4 2012 which I purchased at Southgate Audi and had serviced at Audi Edmonton North for a number of years. I noticed it taking more oil in 2020 which I asked about and was reassured on numerous occasions by several service staff that this is very normal for older Audi cars. Once they told me it was because it was cold out, they replaced a throttle control valve. Oil consumption had gone from putting in a litre once a year to a litre every few months. At the 100,000 mark I decided to invest in the vehicle to keep it longer as things reportedly looked good and the auto market is rough. I put at least $6000 into new 3M, new tires, regular maintenance, and a remote starter. A couple months later I noticed the oil consumption worsened. I was insistent, calling service 5 times over a couple months. I started googling and reading the forums. Finally I spoke to someone who directed me to monitor amount of oil consumed and following that allowed me to bring it in. The scope confirmed an apparently well known oil consumption issue related to a manufacturing flaw in these 2L turbo engines with poor fitting pistons rings which allow for oil leaking, carbon build up, scoring, and eventual catastrophic engine failure. There was a class action lawsuit in the US and this issue was covered under extended warranty in the US and Europe. Audi Canada has not offered the extended warranty. Maybe Canadians are too polite or not litigious enough. I contacted Audi Canada because the forums indicated some people have quietly had this issue covered. They reached out to their technical analysis team, which just turned out to be the Audi North dealership, and they did not have my back. They recommended not covering this repair because I was outside of the warranty window. Now if you’ve stuck with me this far, I was inside this window when I first brought the issue to Audi North’s attention and they reassured me that consuming more oil is perfectly normal, nothing to worry about. Once I knew what the issue was called, then everyone and their dog was like “Oh yes, the faulty piston rings, such a shame, nothing we can do”. So my issue is the deception and allowing me to go outside of warranty window while spending more money on a car that they knew would need $9000-12000 in piston or full engine repair. And get this, once the car, which I have diligently maintained only at Audi, was diagnosed and I made the difficult decision to sell, Audi North would offer me nothing on trade in. They will not even buy their own car back. So a car that cost $56000 in 2012 dollars, at 114,000km is worthless in their eyes due to a known manufacturing default. Shame on the dealership for their part in this. I expected more out of a luxury brand. A disappointing experience that I now share with anyone who will listen. Pictures below of my car in 2023 that I sold privately for a song. There are a number of these cars on the used car market that I am sure have the same issue but I was probably the only one disclosing that. Terrible for Audi and VW reputation. I have the receipts for all of this. If you are having a similar issue google it and read the forums, there are specific words to use for the tests you need to try to get coverage for this issue. Be insistent, they will try to dissuade you.

While I didn't end up buying a car (for reasons that are not related to the dealership), I had a good experience with everyone on the sales staff. Everyone was very nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. Communication was always open and transparent, without ever being pushy. Highly recommended.
