KDS Karate (Karate-do Shotokai)
Shotokai follows the progressive yet traditional teachings of Karate passed down directly from the father of Karate, O'Sensei Gichin Funakoshi, through such figures as Shigeru Egami and the clubs, now sadly passed, leader Mitsusuke Harada - or as he is referred to in the organization, Harada Sensei. If that was enough reading for you I will summarize what comes further down: Excellent club full of very helpful members who form a friendly welcoming community focused on mutual growth and fulfillment. The children's classes are excellent with skilled instructors who really invest in the children's development. Children gain benefits such as improved confidence, balance, self discipline, coordination and a sense of accomplishment.Fair Disclosure: I am a member of the club, but I can say, completely without bias, that I've never heard anyone say anything negitive about the club or the Sensei's abilities, care or attention or investment in his students of any age or ability. For those of you who are not tired of reading:Harada sensei and Egami sensei extended the hard learned lessons of O'sensei Funakoshi and continued to refine and develop his Karate. They stayed true to his convictions that sporting competitions were counter productive to the peaceful development of ones body and mind.As a result, Shotokai does not hold the sport combat(kumite) events that other schools do.Under the hands of Egami sensei, the original karate teachings of O'sensei Funakoshi expanded and grew. Abrupt aggressive motions based on strength changed, smoothed and were replaced by finesse and technique. These teachings were further extensively developed by Harada Sensei right up until his recent passing away. The result is a karate style with one of, if not the, most direct lineages to O'sensei Funakoshi. The style is powerful but gentle, smooth and refined. A heavy emphasis is placed on cooperative friendly practises and mutual development. The nonviolent nature of this style readily lends its self to being very approachable to beginners who will see affirming self development as they find their path towards being a skilled martial artist. The head instructor/sensei of this particular club is a 5th dan(in Shotokai there are only 5 dans) who has been actively practicing for more than 40 years. He is very passionate and enthusiastic about spreading the art of Shotokai.I highly recommend giving this club a try.
