I’ve had my share of a multitude of discriminatory experiences but not often in college or university grounds. Except when visiting UofT libraries. Passive aggressive/racial microaggression in which indirect – yet insidious environmental and behavioural actions communicate racist ideas and thoughts in more subtle ways. From my recent experience, John P. Robarts Research Library and this one (Gerstein Science Information Centre) are one of the most discriminatory libraries within Canada. For being regarded a “prestigious” university, it’s disappointing to learn that UofT lacks so much transparency. UofT advertises diversity, inclusion and equity but many of its policies, regulations, and fine prints promote discrimination and exclude those in the community from having access to learning materials. UofT doesn’t even offer a membership option to the community. I reached out and visited a different GTA university library and this was their reply: “Hello and welcome! Yes, our libraries are open to visitors from the general public. You won't be able to do certain things (like book a private study space or check out a book), but you are welcome to come and study.”

I love this library! It’s the perfect spot on the campus to focus and study. The only problem is it is really cold on the second floor. You are likely to see most of the people studying with their winter jackets on. This is a bit sad as the second floor is the best floor. The temperature on the other floors is just fine.

The library is nice and it has a lot of space. But most of the time people talk loud in the studying room and no one cares. That’s so annoying

Very nice place, huge library with computers for students only. However sofa and chairs are for every one. Odd smell can be found in basement study room. 3D printing available down stairs. Very warm.

I come here every week for a research program. This is a very nice facility, good for studying as well. Giving 4 stars and not 5 because once I saw a huge spider in the washroom

It’s so annoying that a group of people are talking so loudly, but apparently no supervisor here can address this issue. Why don’t they go to the study room instead? Isn’t that lowering voice a common sense in library? Gerstein definitely has the worst management!

I love it. Cozy, good lights, great computer chairs, and silence. Best place to get things done on campus.

A great place to study as it is very quiet compared to most libraries. There are a lot of places to sit at and several different environments to fit your preferences, like computer rooms, sofas, small meeting tables, library settings, etc. The entire building has a strong smell of old wood, but one can easily get used to it.

The washroom is terrible. Reading areas are very quiet with comfortable chairs and desks. There is a veggie restaurant in the basement.
