Sun-Mar Corporation-Composting Toilets

They are not manufacturing composters at this time, but will happily take orders...

Our experience with Sun-Mar composting toilets dates back more than 20 years when we first installed one at our cottage. Since our experience was so great, my father and brother also installed them at their cottages and we have put one into the next cottage we bought. We especially love that we can use it during the winter when we snowmobile to the island. They make the BEST product and we hope to install one on our boat next.

Purchases a 3000 unit years ago for the cottage. Has served us well although the large size we selected and occasional/sporadic use meant it took years to finally get finished product. There were a couple hiccups which Sunmar addresses appropriately and we had to learn to monitor operation properly. I recommend the newer low water option if capacity for excess leachate capture is an issue.No solution is perfect so I rate this a 5 star. The system gave us a relatively cost effective option. We didn’t have to carve up a bunch of our mature forest property and got the cottage up and running faster as a result.

I'd love to love my sun mar product, but I'm still waiting on my Spacesaver composting toilet. Ordering from a local vendor, it had expected shipping of 15-20 days. I was then told that Sun Mar can take up to 30 before shipping which was fine. But it's been 4 months and no one can tell me a thing about my order. I've contacted both the vendor and Sun Mar directly.I totally understand there are delays, but we just built a tiny house to near completion in 2 months... even with delays we received every appliance and essential item we ordered for the build in a timely manner... except for this.

Don’t waste your money! We have a small cottage with one user, followed instructions and still had to manually remove the waste. It never worked properly and now it doesn’t run at all. It’s basically a grossly (!) overpriced potty.Little to no help from SunMar even though it’s under warranty. Parts only. And they diagnose over email?? Then suggest I fix it myself!Now I’ve got a great big, useless toilet to try and dispose of.For $2700 this is not a good investment.

I purchased the system wanting it to work so badly two months in desperately needing customer service and it is nowhere to be found.

We have had our Sun-Mar Excel composting toilet for 8 years. It has overflowed liquid waste from the evaporation chamber approximately every 6 months. Isn’t this everyone’s worst nightmare when they are considering a composting toilet – urine and feces uncontained by the composting toilet and all over the floor? Having to touch it, having it leak out into your home, having it splatter across your floor and your clothing as you carry the unit through the house so it can be cleaned outside?3 days ago, after having completed this cleaning again just a few weeks ago, I noticed a puddle of goo coming from under the unit. We checked the drain and it was clear. There was no buildup in the evaporation chamber and there was no liquid in it. This time, instead of dripping all the way out of the house, and instead of relatively clean water, it poured effluent material (read: a mix of urine and liquefied feces) all the way from the bathroom, through the kitchen, down the stairs, across the living room and lobby, and out the door. It poured onto me as I carried the unit out of the house. The smell would have made a billy goat gag.There leaking from the entire perimeter of the sea between the base and the evaporation chamber. We removed the base and found it filled with liquid waste, insulation soaked and electrical components submerged. The gel coat on the bottom of the main unit had burn marks across the entire surface and a central area where it had bubbled and cracked, consequently breaching the integrity of the fiberglass and creating a hole in the evaporation chamber.The thermostat malfunctioned and the heater continued to heat, slowly melting the gel coat on the underside of the unit. This shows by large areas of discoloration and melting fiberglass. This type of bubbling and cracking is caused by continuous and prolonged heat.After contacting Sun-Mar we have been told that this could not possibly have happened and the unit is not under warranty. They would send a replacement part at a cost of $150 shipping which would take weeks.We will definitely be looking at another brand. Product failure and poor customer service.

The Sun Mar toilet we have in our cottage is still working very well and has beed for well over 20 years! I have no hesitation in recommending them. I did need to have a few questions answered a few years ago and they were very easy to deal with very prompt response and all the informmation I required and more!

I’d love to leave this Canadian company a 0 Star review. But after three months of trying to get someone to call me back, I’ll soon be giving up. I left one final voicemail today with a bit of an annoyed undertone. Hopefully that will produce a result. But, I won’t hold my breath.Having gotten tired of waiting for Sun Mar to call me back, I did what I thought was the next best thing; I bought a unit from Lowes, about six weeks ago. The delivery time was stated 10-14 days. Needless to say, we’re long past that. Lowes can only tell me it’s back ordered. It seems Sun Mar also refuses to call their retail partners back.By this weeks end, if I don’t have a result in my favour, I will be canceling my order for Sun Mar products and shopping another manufacturer like Natures Head or Separett. Both of which have called me back today from calls left last Friday.At this point I’ll say, don’t waste your time shopping Sun Mar. On customer service alone, they’ll leave you regretful.
