Turned me away after one session when I had debilitating anxiety and depression over a decade ago when I was 18. I was terrified and I needed help. I could barely leave my room. He just asked basic textbook psychoanalysis questions that you learn in first year psychology. I answered them openly. That was it. Told me I was fine and I needed to get a job. He just went through the motions and couldn’t wait to be done with me. Life got much harder for a long time afterward. Can’t believe he still has enough clients to make a living. Some reviews say you need to be ready and willing to work with him. Not in my case. He simply didn’t want me in his office for some reason. Both myself and my parents were confused and discouraged. I know it’s hard to get in to see a psychiatrist these days but I’d wait longer for a different doctor.

I appreciate the fact, when we first met, Dr. Y. Sharipo answered my questions honestly with advice! I knew I was depressed & I felt confident at the end of the call that his recommendations was what I needed. (I have not read his recommendations yet)

I have been in psychiatric outpatient care for nearly 30 years and have had some wonderful people assist with treatment for chronic depression anxiety and BPD as well as chronic pain from degenerative disc disease with neuralgia, fibromyalgia and a delayed hip replacement due to covid. This man is like wood. I woke up this morning with laryngitis and my body hurt everwhere. I can barely move. I have been diagnosed with polyps on my vocal cords that are overlapping and larynx changes which cause voice loss. The only thing I can and MUST do for this is total vocal rest. I had an video conference booked with him at 10:30 a.m. By 10 I realized that my voice was not coming back today. I spoke to a lovely caring woman at his office who asked me if I would like to rebook and that she would call me back. When she did i was informed that I hadn't given enough notice and would be charged $55. I asked how I could possibly do that if I this malady had just returned this morning. Next thing I know she transfers me directly to this doctor". I whispered in my tiny voice "what is the issue?". Again I was informed that 48!!!! hours were required for cancellation. Again I asked how I could possibly have known I would be like this today 2 days ago. He reiterated 48 hours were required or I would have to pay to reschedule.I told him our business was done. Today was to be the second half of my assessment. In disbelief he said "what?". I told him he had no compassion and that i was very upset. I again repeated that we were done and hung up on him. Who the heck (lighter expletive inserted) wants a psychiatrist who has no compassion! I then called my doctor's office to let them know I was cancelling the referral...period! 10 months of waiting for an accepted referral through my GP. At least 6 pyschiatrists refused the referrals before I got him. This follows 3 years of trying to get real assistance through Alberta Mental Health since my last psychiatrist Dr. Louwrens Smit retired. He was amazing and I wouldn't be here today to say this if it weren't for him. The difference between the two doctors is vast. Dr. Shapiro should be ashamed of himself. And he should read these reviews! I wish I had of..."

I don't know where all the negative reviews are coming from. I do understand that those that seek the help of a psychiatrist are often mentally fragile and need empathy, and while Dr. Shapiro is not over-the-top in showing his empathy, he really is empathetic and caring, not to mention knowledgeable.Upon first meeting Dr. Shapiro, I found his manner to be strictly professional and perhaps a bit stern or cold. However, I stuck with him, knowing that he is highly respected as a psychiatrist by doctors and colleagues, and I'm so glad that I did.Dr. Shapiro has been extremely detailed in my case. He has not given up on me when I just stopped taking my medications, though he could have. He has let me vent my frustrations and answered my questions. Additionally, he has been patient with me when it was unclear which medications would actually help my condition with the fewest side effects. I am getting better under his care. When I needed it, Dr. Shapiro also supported my disability application with detailed, meticulous documentation. In short, Dr. Shapiro has been professional in dealing with me. He is honest and tells it like it is. I really appreciate his serious style, and now he will even crack a smile once in a while, though I now know a super friendly manner is NOT required to treat patients effectively. In short, if you acknowledge when visiting Dr. Shapiro that you're going to visit a psychiatrist and NOT a car salesman, your grandmother, or your own personal cheerleading squad, you will appreciate Shapiro and his expertise. He won't stroke your ego, but he will help you out. I'm glad I stuck around to discover this fact for myself.

Dr Shapiro has changed my life from night to day. I was misdiagnosed for the majority of my life and on medication that did little to nothing to help me. I struggled with suicidal thoughts everyday until I saw Dr Shapiro, he gave me the proper diagnosis and medication. Dr Shapiro is very knowledgeable and professional. I am so grateful for what he has started for me, a long road of healing and growing which I am now able to do.
