Burnaby Junior Chess Club

Coach Curtis is a wonderful, kind- hearted instructor and leader. His passion is chess, and he inspires his students to do their best through thoughtful analysis and positive encouragement. Over the past two years my son has learned so much about chess and sportsmanship under the direction of coach Curtis, and he is proud to be a member of the Burnaby Chess Club.

I am happy to find online lessons as an option during COVID-19. I was sceptical how chess would work online, but it is great so far. Coach pays attention to details during the game, and provides guidance for improving chess skills. We study in a small groups. It is alway lots of interesting information from theory and plenty of practice. I can always ask questions and feel engaged in the study process. I would recommend these chess lessons as it is a great possibility to develop critical thinking, strategic planning, and decision making for children.

My child loves going to class. He often talks about what he learned from coach Curtis with so much excitement.And he is always looking forward to the class next week.

I have known Curtis for about 10yrs, and he taught two of my older kids and now my third kid. I like how Curtis makes chess a community thing and drawing the young kids together and being friends. You know he is there for love of the game, and developing the kids. There is no regimented chess schooling / pressure here, its about having fun, and still my son is playing into the 1500s, having developed solid chess foundations. This approach works well with us: respect, interest, enjoyment, friendship and I see these values at Burnaby Jr Chess Club. Big thanks, development of the life skills.
