Southwood Care Centre

We can only speak about the hospice. Our dad had excellent end of life care when he stayed there in March. Unfortunately he passed away but the staff and doctors/nurses were very compassionate and professional . Highly recommend

Excellent care, pleasant surroundings. Decent meal, drink and snack options. Wonderful.

The staff from there are very friendly organized and they really care about providing a fabulous quality care to seniors.

My dad was here for approx. 3 years. He had dementia and was in the Willowpark Unit. I could not have asked for better care. All the staff was so patient and nice to him. He had the best care!!!

Since my mother (now 97) came to live in Southwood about 5 years ago, she has had 5 broken bones on their watch. Mostly because they do not come when she rings the bell for assistance. They are understaffed as everywhere but can be seen chatting and visiting with other staff the hour before shift change. Weekends and evenings have NO supervision. There is no unit manager on the ward in Bonavista unit and care has been neglectful on this unit after she was moved to a private room there from a shared room on another unit (which was much better run). It has been a struggle to have her in this care home and efforts to move her to another facility have proved futile through transition services.

A few of the nurses and HCAs are compassionate and caring but the specialized staff like OT are lacking professionalism. High turnover of staff which is a tell tale sign of the poor management.

Since my mom's arrival back in June, the level of care and class delivered by the staff has been exceptional. Mom was located in the Willow Park unit and arrived to a wonderful greeting. It's beyond words to express the guilt of placing my mom in a long-term facility, but this place was different. Everyone was so sweet to mom, were constantly available to attend to her needs and each of them had a genuine warm soul. Mom never stayed long in her first unit as she was moved within days to the late stage dementia unit with seven other ladies. We never knew how bad mom's struggles with LBD had become, but the nurses and aids were resourceful in helping to ensure she had the right level of care and always spoke to her. Sadly, mom passed a couple weeks ago and what more can you say when the staff shared in our grief. Our family was touched by the tenderness of everyone working in Willow Park. Does Southwood AgeCare deserve 5 stars? I'm not sure about that. In fact, I'm not sure many places deserve 5 stars, but the 5 stars serve to tell you that we looked into 4 other places for mom (2 were private) and none of them held a candle to the level of service and compassion offered in this facility. We will be forever grateful for the skill of all staff at ensuring my mom was loved and she was treated with compassion. Thanks!One concern, had mom's illness been prolonged, would be how my loving dad would check in at the desk below and then have to walk up an icy cold walkway in the winter to get into the care facility. Please think about this solution for elderly visitors. (Maybe there is a solution I don't know about.)

My father was in this facility for over 5 months. The care he received from the staff here was incredible. We are so very grateful for the compassion and caring during a very long and difficulty time.

I spent 3 months in Southwood hospice and am so grateful for the terrific care given by the whole staff. Caring, professional people, comforting surroundings and good food. Definitely the best environment for those who need it.

During my mother's stay two years ago.She had lack of attention and wasn't attended to when she rang the bell. She was immobile.Some shifts staff better than other.Because of careless staff mom was injured numerous times while being moved from bed to wheelchair.The food was awful and inedible. I had to supplement her meals by bringing a small fridge that I stocked with food.But again she needed assistance to have that food. The wait for response took several minutes to hours. She felt ignored.I was constantly speaking to management about the lack of staff care. Always being told they are short staffed. So hire people but not likely. That would take from their profit.I also believe she was treated in such a manner because of calling out the uncompassionate rude and mean staff members. They do exist.Mom would ask me not to say anything because she felt things would get worse.Sadly my mom passed away last July and I'd say the last couple of months had improved over 3 years at this facility.This is not the only place that care is unadequate to these seniors.
