Biggar Lagoon Wetlands Bird Viewing Platform

We visited this lovely nature reserve yesterday, and both of us were gobsmacked by the sheer quantity and variety of bird and animal species. However there is one caveat, but it's a BIG one.The Biggar Wetlands are OVERRUN WITH TICKS. In all my years of hiking, I've never found a single tick, yet after an hour we each found at least five ticks on our clothes and in our hair. I've hiked at Short Hills Provincial Park twice in the past month, and visited Dundas Valley five weeks ago, and we didn't find any critters. And while I'm on the subject of critters, we were swarmed by mosquitoes along the 2nd section of the path (at the east side of the wetlands). It should be noted that the mosquitoes left us alone when we sat on a raised viewing platform.If the ticks and mosquitoes weren't such an issue, I can honestly say this would be one of my favourite wild spaces. It's amazing that this spectacular and beautifully designed space is just steps away from a subdivision. But please watch out for the TICKS!

Great bird watching spot!

Level walking on crushed gravel with some shade this morning. Very little water in the ponds so only saw a few types of birds and some turtles. Lots of traffic noise from the QEW highway. Good place for sitting but not a long walk. No bathrooms.

Bring along some birdseed and feed the birds from your hand at the bird feeder stations! The spring will definitely be something to look forward to this year...there are so many special habitat areas that have been added since I last visited anyway.

What a wonderful addition to Grimsby. This area is so tranquil and serene. I love taking a walk in here after visiting GOTL. So many birds to discover as well!

Nice place for a walk, lots of informative signs about the area. Parking is available at the nearby dog walking area. There is street parking but very limited.

Wonderful little nature area, tucked away off of Winston Road. Parking is on street in select laybys only. Paths are patted down gravel, some mowed grass paths. Lots of swallow boxes, a wooden structure that gives you a heightened lookout point, lots of plants, flowers, birds, and insects. Not many places for shade. Beautiful open marsh setting. Great little place for an hour or two stopover, if you're looking for some outdoor time, specifically bird watching.
