Akbar's Own Indian Restaurant
A great restaurant! Been there four times. Always friendly, fast service! (Usually with a motorized robot bring the food.) Highly recommend Akbar’s Own.I recently had the mixed platter (chicken & veggie pakoras & 2 samosas plus two types of chutney). Great flavour (even without the chutney but spectacular with), just enough crispiness to give it texture! And for an appetizer item, pretty decent size.Previously I had the lamb thali (lunch tray meal), which was awesome. Mine came with some extra pakora (I think), which is even in the picture on the menu and a regular part of their thali but might not be listed in the description so keep an eye out for it!On another outing I had chicken curry (kadhai, I think) and it didn’t disappoint!I usually order “extra hot” (which is their maximum spice level) when it’s an option. Not that day for some reason. Hence it was merely great but not the usual out-of-this-world. “Extra hot” for me feels like “spicy enough” but it might be too much / little spice depending on the person. If you’re new to Indian food & Akbar’s in particular, if you have a regular size appetite, try one or two appetizers or the thali (lunchtime only). If you have a bigger appetite, a curry (made as a meal for an extra charge) or some other main dish and perhaps an appetizer will probably suit you better. With company, best to order at least two main dishes (curries with chicken, vegetarian, lamb, beef, or seafood; rice dishes; or tandoor dishes).Sadly, the place has seen a reduction in business due to nearby construction. The more folks that eat there & recommend it to others, the more likely Akbar’s Own can continue as a Vancouver go-to for many more years to come! (Saves travel time for Vancouver people going out to Surrey instead for Indian food of this quality.)But the plus side of this commotion is you’re likely to find the place a quiet setting to have a great meal alone or with company. It’s almost like having the place to yourself (with the occasional pickup orders showing up).But once construction is complete and Akbar's (hopefully) survives it, you'll get to dine on Indian food in a bustling, energetic atmosphere of other Indian food lovers! And don’t make the same planning mistake as me: It’s closed on Sundays. EDIT: They're open on Sundays now!

Really enjoyed this place until my order last night.Whoever is in the kitchen needs to do a MUCH better job of preparing the meats. Ordered 2 lamb dishes, and 1 beef - HUGE blobs of fat bigger than the actual meat. There was more fat than meat, it was actually so disgusting.Imagine you mix up a nice curry with rice, go to take a bite, and you get a literal mouthful of fat. And all 3 dishes with red meat were like this.I’m honestly so disgusted and turned off, I can’t go back here. It’s a shame because the sauces are quite good. But when you pay almost 60 dollars for 3 meat dishes that have one molecule of meat and huge blobs of fat - that’s pretty unacceptable.Lots of Indian restaurants in town. Go somewhere else, or at least DO NOT order any meat here. Disgusting.

Delicious food, friendly service and clean restaurant. I had the lunch special chicken thali which had lots of variety (salad, daal, butter chicken, naan bread, rice, pakora). It was tasty. My partner got the tandoori chicken and liked it.

There was definitely a very long hair that I had to take out from my mouth. None of the people in our place have long hair to even have this situation. The driver has sent the correct order as they mentioned. If you wanted to refund or take responsibility you could have. It is obvious that you will deny these now. After eating a portion of the food now one of us had diarrhoea. This is not what we expect when we spend 86$ in food. We have advised our other friends to avoid this restaurant. Quite disappointing first time ever ordering from here. We will no longer order and will caution others ofcourse. Making us customers seem like a liar and blaming it on a skips driver will not protect our health.

Absolutely wonderful Indian restaurant in Kitsilano neighborhood. Vibe was great, service was outstanding, washroom was clean, all COVID-19 precautions in place, food was dainty. We ordered Aalo Tikki and Kuchumber Salad for appetizer, Paneer Makhani for main, Tandoori Roti bread, Mango Ice Cream for dessert and Sweet & Salty Lime Soda for drinks. Every item was right on point. Staff was so kind to customize Paneer Makhani to our taste, i.e., less sweet, which was generous of them. Will certainly visit again. Highly recommended.

Please don't order from here. They have the worst food. Their lamb biriyani had multiple hairs and it felt like they gave food cooked from yesterday. The brownie was so small for 12$ and no ice cream on it even though they mentioned menu. Moreover, they didn't refund any money. Please skip this restaurant very bad. I feel they exploit customers who order for delivery because we cannot charge then directly. This is very bad

I’m new to Vancouver and tried the Lamb Biryani here from a friend’s reccomendation. The Biryani is really gooooddd, the meat is tender, spices are the right amount and chili spiciness is not sharp and overwhelming. Got mango lassi also and they’re really good for hot days. Owner was super friendly also.

Second time coming here. Got the lunch-to-go both times. Here are pics of my half eaten meal today. The lamb was tender, and the naan was soft. I’m enjoying it so far.
