Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church

Went for my Nonna’s funeral. The priest was extremely rude and insensitive and needlessly rushed the entire ceremony since there was another service afterwards. Speakers had taken the time to prepare a few words but were forced to read passages they had not chosen or rehearsed. At the end, it was planned to have a song dedicated to her by a family member. The priest was visibly annoyed and even gestured rudely during the song to stop immediately since we running short on time. We were very disappointed with the priest’s attitude and actions. I am told this was not the usual priest, but a replacement. He should never be allowed to fill-in again.

This parish is fully dedicated to creating and maintaining a parish that is alive with engagement and participation. With activities that include every age group, their values are based on solid traditional experiences that are so rare in today's society. The parish is operated by many, many dedicated volunteers of different age groups, that do everything from organizing the hugely successful bazar, to baking, to exercise group for the elderly, to Christmas baskets for the less fortunate, to fun activities for the youth group, live Christmas and Easter re-enactments and teaching catechism to a large group of children who parents still believe in the fundamental values instilled by their own parents. A lovely and inclusive parish!

Such a mess. I accompanied my partner to witness his grandmother’s funeral. Not only was it a cold ceremony that felt very impersonal and rushed, my partner who had prepared a song to perform to his 98-year-old late grandmother as a comforting moment amongst family members not only was told « quick » before beginning his song, but was also given a « cut it out » gesture (a whole hand slicing his neck horizontally) halfway through his performance. What a terrible way to RUIN a precious moment that was needed for the family to grieve peacefully. This was the last moment to say farewell for them. Instead, what I felt was « now that we collected your money in our baskets, leave. We have a business to run. »Truly disappointing. They all deserved better.

What I witnessed at my grandmother's funeral was unacceptable and quite honestly shameful. There was no compassion, no feeling, no comfort – only the sense that we were a bother and an inconvenience. My grandmother deserved better. The family deserved better.

On the day of my father's final services I promised myself to never return. Since then (about 6 years ago) I attended only twice more because of special circumstances. Money hungry and rude. It is the home of the Lord, people! Gold gilded walls and fancy pants surroundings won't open the pearly gates. Give the money to the needy. I am Italian and I am embarrassed.

I mean, I went for a funeral, so it's not my own Parrish but I remember going as a child. It's a beautiful church.

Is a nice church to worship our Lord Jesus Christ. The priest, Father Rinaldo, is a very nice person. Gives excellent sermons in Italian and in English.
