We hosted an event inside the auditorium about a year ago. The communications before the booking and the liaison at the event was excellent. The liaison checked in with us multiple times to ensure we had everything we needed and helped us set up the venue. He even troubleshot and fixed our laptop after it failed to power up from sleep.Everything was going great until the liaison stepped out, then a lady claiming to be from the school board stormed in and yelled and accused us of damaging the auditorium's drywall. We tried to explain that the drywall was already damaged and dirty when we arrived. But no matter what we said, she insisted we are on the hook for damages. She eventually walked out in middle of our conversation and disappeared.I asked the liaison to come down and he was very apologetic. He confirmed the lady is part of the school board, and it wasn't the lady's first time disrupting the event. He also promised us that we'd have exclusive access to the auditorium without interruptions as we are paying the rents. Also, he confirmed we didn't damage the drywall and wouldn't be charged for it as the walls were already in disrepair when we arrived. We had no trouble after the lady left and we were not charged for drywall as promised, but it left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I don't particularly like leaving bad reviews, but I still get reminded about the interaction I had on that day. The venue and other employees were great, but one bad apple spoilt the whole experience.

Booked the tatami room months in advance. Got a liquor license and organized a whole party. Gave me less than a week notice to tell me they double booked with another event and there was noting I could do, not a reliable spot to use as a venue.

I've taken two classes so far and my experience varied quite a bit. My first teacher, Koizumi sensei, was amazing. She was personable, open to questions, intelligent, and engaged. A great teacher. My next class was the polar opposite. The teacher was disorganized, phoning it in, and, honestly, not proficient at English. We spent two classes learning counter words, and then all of sudden, at a break neck pace, were learning complicated grammar. I won't name my second teacher, but she honestly killed my desire to learn Japanese a bit.

ここは、バンクーバーの学校の中に一番日本語学校ですThis is the greatest Japanese Language school in Vancouver. If you are a Nisei wanting your children to learn your mother tongue and culture, or if you're just an adult who really likes Pokemon, this is the place to learn Japanese. I'm in my third year now and can't recommend it enough. At VJLS you get a holistic experience - you even get a yearbook and a school song! It's not just language acquisition you get from VJLS. The school has over a hundred year history in the community and is showing no signs of waning. I love the sense of community I've developed from this place, I could never have experienced it learning Japanese anywhere else.

This is the best daycare/preschool for kids! The teachers teach the kids in a proper Japanese way and my daughters Japanese has gotten so good! She can sing so many songs in Japanese, has learned so many polite sayings, the school itself is so clean and organized. They have cute little cubbies to keep their belongings, change their shoes to inside shoes once they arrive... parents sign in and sign out their kids and have their own fob to get in the school Door to keep out strangers. There are many daycare teachers downstairs who are so nice and friendly, and upstairs is the preschool which has two classrooms... one for 3-4 year olds and the other side is 4-5 year olds I believe. The teachers upstairs are all Japanese and well educated as well, and work so well with all the children. They have clean washrooms with toilet seats that are made for children and Lots of activities and toys for all the kids. All of their toys get disinfected one by one, it’s SO CLEAN! There is a good sized playground where all the kids play and have fun, or a gym they can run around when the weather isn’t too great. They have awesome events and field trips, sports days, guest speakers and fun sushi making days or curry making days! They put on holiday concerts and end of year concerts as well. They hold spring bazaars and fall bazaars... they also have a Japanese school upstairs in the other building wing for adults and older kids. There is an elevator and a stairwell as well. A large gym, a tatami room, a large kitchen, waiting area and more! I love this school and the teachers here.... it really is a hidden gem!
