The process to adopt was an okay process. I dealt with Melissa. Her communication was okay. At first she was very responsive but when I just had to return the dog. It was so hard get in touch with her until I sent email to the home office. When returning the dog today the volunteer/foster was rude, arrogant, and made an unnecessary comment where I could have went off on her but I didn’t. Seems like she had something against blacks.I would not recommend them to potential adopters. Their volunteers are horrible and rude.. never again!

I currently own a 1-year old cat. I saw a calico kitten on the HART website and wanted to adopt her as a companion to my kitty. I completed the lengthy and in part intrusive application. That was over 5 weeks ago. I never heard from them. When I checked the website 2 weeks after, the kitten was listed as adopted.I understand that vetting potential adopters is important but HART's process seems over the top and quite arbitrary which several reviewers seem to confirm. I am not necessarily disappointed that I wasn't chosen but that I never got a response from them. Being non-profit and an all-volunteer force is no excuse for unprofessional behavior. After all, there are many shelter organizations around and many work tirelessly and efficiently. HART should be appreciative that people are willing to take in abandoned or neglected animals. Acting like we are doing them a favor is not conducive to placing animals into homes quickly.I went to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (West Ox Rd) instead. Vetting process was quick and to the point. You sign a contract to spy/neuter cat and not to declaw. They will match animal with your home situation but no intrusive questions or demands. They gave us tons of supplies too. Even called us the next day to see how new kitty was settling in. That is how adoption should be: efficient, compassionate, uncomplicated. It's a win-win for all, including the animals.

Wonderful organization! The volunteers are so caring. We just got our doga week ago and she was obviously cared for and prepared very well by her foster parent. So thankful.

We have adopted 4 dogs from HART over the years and each time we were impressed by how dedicated they are to finding good homes for the pets in their care. The interview process and home inspection helps ensure that the pets go to good, safe homes, where the adoptive parents understand that costs and responsibility go hand in hand with the joy of adoption. Everyone we've interacted with at HART has been friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to match the perfect pet with the best new home. If you're looking to bring a four-footed companion into your home, I can't recommend HART enough.

My family has adopted two dogs from HART, and they quickly became members of the family. I love how selective this organization is during the adoption process to ensure their dogs and cats are going to good homes. Since moving to Georgia, I especially appreciate that HART brings dogs up from the south so they have a better chance of being adopted. We love and will continue to support them!

Got my own dog from this rescue. If you take your time to search for you one true perfect dog this rescue will certainly do everything they can to help you find him or her! I always recommend keeping am eye on their new arrivals list if none of their current dogs match you 100%. Also be open to foster dogs, that is a great way to get to know a dog and also to see what happens once you get past the initial honeymoon stage of their personalities. Once adopted and you do end up with troubles such as housebreaking issues (can happen in a new place the dog in unfamiliar with) or too much pulling on the leash for example, they do have volounteers that can come out to give you some advice on how to build a better relationship between you and your dog and how to improve the problems you're experiencing.Definitely recommend checking out their two events every Saturday between 12.00pm-3.00pm. You will probably see me at the one by Let Supplies Plus one in Chantilly.PicturesThe small black on is my dog names Ivy and the big one is my current foster Olivia.

We have had a wonderful experience as both fosters and adopters with HART. They are a tribe of animal lovers that are well-connected, committed, and knowledgable about animal rescue. The fosters we have had get their medical needs met right away, and our adopted dog Sophie is such a wonderful addition to our family. Highly recommend working with HART to find your next family member!!

This was our experience with HART: went to an adoption event on Saturday with myself and my partner. After months of searching for a rescue dog, we fell in love with a great dog with the perfect temperament and age (4 years) we were looking for. We submitted an application and went through two long in person interviews through which both interviewers stated they were impressed and one of them said he could not see a single reason why we wouldn't be approved for adoption pending a virtual home visit. A couple of days go by with no communication as we were told to expect a virtual home tour. After reaching out I was informed, on behalf of the kennel manager, that we were denied the opportunity to adopt the dog we applied for because I work long hours" and we "have not had a dog before" (the last one being a lie as we already told them about our previous dogs). We were also not given the option to adopt any other dogs as the email stated we should consider fostering instead (note: we wouldnt be allowed to foster the dog we wanted). Before all this

After losing my first cat of 14 years to cancer, I started to look for new cats to welcome into my life. HART was an immense help and really are looking out for the best interests of the animals they help. I now have a bonded pair of cats with me and I absolutely adore them. I cannot thank HART enough for what they do and for bringing me together with these amazing fur babies. I cannot recommend HART enough for anyone looking to welcome a new pet into their lives and homes.

We adopted our dog Maisie from HART and had a wonderful experience. Their team of committed volunteers is laser-focused on finding the right permanent home for animals. They'll spend a lot of time learning about you and your home to make sure the animal you adopt has a low chance of being returned down the line. For instance, if you have a kid (or are planning to have a kid), they'll make sure to match you with a good fit and not one who is going to cause problems if a baby tries to take its toy. But part of this process is to make sure you get the right pet. For us, they nailed it.
