My son has been attending Sylvan for about 6 weeks now. He has a learning disability in reading and writing. Over the last few years these difficulties have made him highly stressed about going to school and have made Sunday nights and Monday mornings terribly challenging for both of us. His inability to understand the material in class and to keep up with his peers has made school feel like a daily punishment for him. He has an IEP and I have repeatedly been assured by his school that he is recieving adequate help, however, his anxiety and hopelessness said otherwise.Sylvan has met my grade 6 child at a level that is right for him - where he is challenged but feels capable of meeting their expectations. Currently, he is working on skills at a grade 1/2 level but that's ok because he is learning! He enjoys the time he spends there and he works hard because he feels his ability and understanding growing. More importantly, from my perspective, his confidence is growingMy son is usually a motivated boy and given an opportunity to improve, he will apply himself to doing so. School had taken away his motivation for learning by slowly and painfully leaving him further and further behind his peers - without giving him a means to catch up. Sylvan has given him a sense of control over his situation by giving him adequate attention, realistic challenges, meaningful and unique tools to make him more self reliant and finally, hope.With a covid exposure in my kid's school last week I decided to let my kids decide if they wanted to attend school this week or do the assignments at home. My son, who just 2 short months ago would have done anything to avoid going to school, told me I think I better go to class Dad." His confidence is back

The experience I have had with Sylvan has been very positive. My son (grade 2) gets very anxious with change but they are always so supportive, warm and helpful. I really appreciate the regular check-ins on progression and the offer to speak directly with his school teacher. My son went from refusing to do any school work at home to walking in the door from Sylvan and wanting to continue to learn. I would absolutely recommend Sylvan to any parent that has a struggling child in school.

We discovered our two sons were struggling in different subject areas while in public school. One was feeling very stressed about Math and the other in English and writing. Their learning challenges brought such big emotions to them during and after school and this past October. One day my youngest came home sobbing that he just didn't get Math. I was so very sad for him and could see that he was needing more support but I wasn't able to identify where exactly. I knew my oldest was struggling with writing and was hoping it would just click for him while at school, but it wasn't. I began searching for ways to support them both when I came across an ad for the Langford Sylvan Center. I reached out and set up an appointment to meet the lovely owner and to have the boys level tested. The results showed that they were clearly missing some foundational skills in the subjects that they were struggling with in school. That's when my husband and I decided to sign our boys up for two sessions a week. They both were a bit nervous at first to attend the Sylvan Center; thinking it would be too much like school. But the boys have totally changed their minds about that now. The teachers are qualified, super kind and make learning really fun for them. I earnestly recommend this Sylvan Learning Center to anyone who has a child struggling in school. They may just need a more cozy, one-on-one experience to get some of the basic skills they missed in their education. As of today, our boys have been attending for two months now and they are already feeling more confident in their *challenging* subject areas. As a parent who really values a solid academic foundation for my kids' futures, that makes me feel very hopeful.

We shared the “learning at school” difficulty of a child with the Sylvan director. Within a few days, our child had been assessed, weak areas identified, and a program defined to improve the major problem area. After two months of attendance, the student has developed a positive appreciation of the learning process, attends willingly, and is steadily catching up.While the cost is not insignificant, we consider it well worth it!

My 8 year old son has been going to the Sylvan learning centre in Langford twice a week for six months. When he started he was reading at a pre-K level, he is now reading at mid grade one level and improving quickly. He always comes out of his sessions with a smile on his face and a good attitude, he tells me about what he learned and any fun moments he shared with his favourite teacher Sam. The centre is also very accommodating when schedules need to be altered or changed, Sam always lays out alternative options which is awesome for a busy family. Overall my experience has been extremely positive, knowing my son is getting the help he needs with true professionals is such a relief.

My children enjoyed attending; however, they are not equipped to deal with children with reading disorders. There's also constant turnover in staff which makes it challenging.

My child looks forward to her Sylvan tutoring at Westshore, as there is excellent rapport and positive bonds of trust and encouragement. When she is facing challenging content there are plenty of smiles and happy high 5's" no matter how long for her to absorb and understand the topic. Also I am impressed the excellent parent teacher consultation meetings and feedback comments/reports to monitor my child's progress over time. From the moment I sat down with director Samantha, I knew this was the right fit for us. She made our son feel at ease after being very nervous about getting tutoring done and he actually had fun and told me he wanted to go there. It's only been a month and we can already see the growth in our son and its all thanks to the wonderful teachers at Sylvan. I highly recommend them if your kids need that extra little bit of help in school.
