The House of Sew
I have been sewing small things here and there for the past 15 years. I signed up after reading some reviews that intermediate sewers enjoyed the Sewing 101 class so I signed up and loved it. It was a great refresher course. I learnt so many new tips and tricks to finish my projects with finesse. The skills acquired from each project are relevant, modern and up to date with current trends. There was plenty of space. Nothing was rushed and Beverley took time to visit every student along each step. I had so much fun and look forward to signing up for more classes!

I recently completed the Sewing 101 course and it was amazing! I am a complete beginner to sewing and found Bev to be a patient and thorough teacher. The projects were well paced, great for learning and i found i was finishing every week with new skills and a new sewn item i actually liked! The atmosphere in the studio was really fun and creative. I'll definitely be taking some more of her courses in the future.

I would put 1 star, however I can’t speak to the actual class itself - just the business practices. I had something important come up and requested to reschedule my course and they have a very strict cancellation policy - they said they would require an additional $75 to reserve my spot in an upcoming class - otherwise I would have to wait for a last minute cancellation and that wouldn’t be guaranteed. I understand that it is inconvenient to have people requesting to reschedule 4 days prior to the course (requested Tuesday, course on Saturday) - but, people are human with human schedules and things that change. A simple reschedule when you’ve already paid for the full class should not cost anything further.

I am not a crafty person and it had been about twenty years since I took Home Economics in grade nine. I had forgotten how to sew, completely! As such, I felt compelled to re-learn some basic sewing skills. At my first class, I even forgot what a bobbin was :) So - I was completely amazed that even in one beginning class I was able to make a cushion cover that was highly functional and actually quite pretty! In total the beginner class was four sessions, and we learned quite a few things from Beverly - including zippers, buttons, and basic hemming. We made a makeup bag in the third class, and it looks super amazing! I felt very proud after this class, and was shocked at how fast Beverly was able to teach us sewing skills. Not only was Beverly patient and understanding, but she also taught us about the pitfalls of fast fashion" and how much work goes into a garment. I really appreciate the fact she wants to empower us to reduce fabric waste and create beautiful items on our own. It was an awesome class and I would highly recommend. Thanks Beverly!"

I loved my Sewing 101 classes at the House of Sew. The smaller class sizes mean you're able to get a lot of one on one time, and the fully-equipped studio makes it so anyone can jump into a class to test the waters of sewing (and get totally hooked) before buying their own machine. Bev is a great instructor with lots of hands-on experience who has secured a great space to teach out of. She also has a wonderful sense of humour and creates a fun atmosphere for everyone, definitely a huge plus when you're ripping out countless stitches correcting over-enthusiastic beginner mistakes.

I attended the sewing 101 class over a weekend in December 2018. I thought the classroom was suitable and the brother sewing machines were very nice to use. The class size was reasonable and I liked the projects that we made (tote bag, cushion cover, and toiletry bag). Unfortunately, the instructor’s teaching style was not a match for me. She was knowledgeable about sewing but didn’t appear to have much experience in teaching/instructing. Explanations were often difficult to understand, there was defensiveness when questions were asked or students didn’t understand the explanation, and the word ‘wrong’ was used a lot (this is wrong, you’re wrong, the design is wrong, etc). The class seemed to be focused on the completion of the three projects rather than learning the sewing techniques necessary to make the three items. The instructor would often do the work for students rather than helping them to learn. I was one of the few students who pushed to do everything myself because I learn best by doing, not by watching (which is why I pay money for an in person class!). The instructor was an employee, not the owner of the business so that is likely a factor. I want to take sewing 102 but only if it is with a different instructor. I hope people find this review helpful!

Took the Sewing 101 and Dressmaking 101 class and absolutely loved it! <3 The instructor is great breaking down the steps when making projects and projects are modern and not outdated. The studio is very stylish as well and the environment is very calming! I totally recommend taking classes here for those who are looking to take sewing off of you to do list!

I loved the space and energy in the studio! I took the Sewing 101 class even with some experience sewing, I learned SO much from this class. Beverly was such a great teacher and you can tell she really had a lot of experience in the industry which is exactly what I look for when learning new skills! The materials were all high quality, and the machines were so easy to use even for beginners! The projects we made were cute, I especially loved the wash bag because we used learned some cool techniques with that one project - Inserting zipper and sewing on linings were always a huge question-mark for me, so I am super happy I was able to learn that. The alterations portion was great because everyone had a different alteration to do, so it was great to learn different methods. I highly recommend checking The House of Sew out if you are trying to get into sewing, or even if you have had experience sewing. You will learn so much!

I highly recommend The House of Sew for anyone interested in the classes available here.Beverly is an excellent teacher, and very knowledgeable. The classes are at a great pace and it keeps it interesting, we were sewing our first project in no time! I learned way more than I expected to in 2 short days. I had taken a beginners sewing class before and learned 1/5 of what I learned in 2 days here. The space is gorgeous and a great place to spend time in a class.I will be returning for more classes.

I learned to sew in grade 7 however I never really continued aside from small projects. I'm interested in vintage clothing and was looking for a place to learn how to mend/sew clothing and build on my (very) basic skills. Beverly is a highly experienced pattern maker who has a small studio in downtown Edmonton where she teaches classes for beginners and intermediate sewers. She is passionate about sustainability, has created classic and practical projects that will suit the needs of anyone taking the class, and her explanations and demos are easy to follow. I took Sewing 101 and Dressmaking 101 and really enjoyed both classes. There were 8 of us in one and 4 of us in the other which was nice as it allowed us to have ample time to ask questions and have one-on-one instruction if we needed it. I was surprised what we were able to accomplish in the small amount of time and pleased with the items I created - a skirt, a pillow, a makeup/pencil case and a bag. Before these classes I felt that sewing clothing was unattainable and I was too old to learn. Beverly helped me understand that sewing is not as daunting as it seems as long as you start simple and have patience. Since the classes I'm currently working on my first independent project (a 1930s pattern for a bra and panties). Thanks Beverly for the inspiration and the education!
