Bird River Canyon Trailhead
Snowshoed the Bird River Canyon Trail on April 7, 2023. After the recent dumping of snow, the conditions were challenging - snow was deep and sticky and I was the first one blazing the trail. The trail was not marked but is easy to see where it goes. It’s fairly wide and appears to be used as an ATV or snowmobile trail. The loop follows through the forest, and there are no views of the canyon from directly along the main path - you have to take some of the side trails to get views of the canyon and rapids. There are some pretty viewpoints and scenery on the trail. I didn’t venture too far off the main trail near the rapids as it was hard to tell where the rocks ended underneath the snow and I didn’t want to fall through unexpectedly. The trail ends at a lookout point overlooking some rapids and the canyon which was nice. It continues in a loop back through the forest and meets up with the main trail again. I snowshoed the loop in a counter clockwise direction, starting with the trail closest to the canyon. Saw some animal tracks - deer for sure and perhaps either lynx or wolf. There was a grouse on the trail that freaked me out suddenly as well. There is a parking space cleared of snow off the side of Hill Road. The trail starts from here on the left side marked with some wooden walking sticks stuck in the snow. Can’t wait to see this trail in other seasons!Follow me on Instagram @brittanymexplores to see photos from my hikes and adventures.
