We chose Garrett Engines because they indicated they could line hone our block - while others in town would not. Unfortunately our experience ended up being very poor. Lessons learned, listen to your peers who have good knowledge and experience (more than changing a spark plug) about shop reputations and performance.in summary the poor experience was due to: high pricing, almost 2 months of delays + additional delays for having to correct the workmanship, poor communication, damage to a part, and more than 3 deficiencies resulting in $700 of additional cost to have the items corrected by another shop.Summary below:1-Dropped parts of for assessment and machining - Sept 5th - exception completion of everything in a month (this was 2 weeks later than what others offered, but no one offered line honing)2-Customer followed up to check that crank and rods were ok. Crank was bent so has to be sublet to another shop. Told 4 of the 6 rods were no good so customer agreed to get new ones. *I'll refer back to this section*3-Customer followed up 2 weeks later to check on progress of crank, because it will dictate what size of bearing are needed. Still not done, told a couple days4-customer followed up the following week about the crank - still not done...end of they week they said5-Customer received (4) replacement connecting rods ordered from Germany that took two weeks to arrive. Dropped off early October and Garret questions why I didn't get 6? (see note 2) so this caused another 2 week delay to order in 2 more from Germany6-Customer followed up to check on crank - still not done.....customer contacted the sublet shop directly to see how they could help...turns out they needed specifications on the journal size, I stepped in to give him the information directly. crank was done 24 hours later (buy a shop that has great reviews....see the pattern)7- mid October (2 weeks late) - get a call from Garrets, crank is done but now have to deck and line hone the block etc.8 - November 5th, get a call that block etc. is done but I have a broken piston and I need new wrist pin bushings. Go to the shop and it looks like a piston was dropped shattering part of the lower skirt - upon my inspection, I could see this happened when attached to the connecting rod - they had removed this piston and non of the others leading me to believe they dropped this. I have pictures of the engine disassembly, with pictures of the pistons on clean worksurface, this was not damaged when sent to their shop. Shop just said they have handled pistons for 30 years, so it was obviously my fault not theirs. Now remember point #2 where the rods were inspected9 - At this point the shop was demonstrating unreliable performance and accountability. I told him to stop doing anything else and wrapped up the bill (which was $600 too much in my opinion). When I got the parts home, I had time to inspect right away and as it was getting put together. The summary of mistakes below:1.) Block was decked for good practice, not that it needed it - the machinists left huge gouges into the deck block. It was in better condition before! The shop that repaired this knew these marks were from their tooling. - Cost to repair $200 and additional wait period1a) it was determined that due to more machining being taken off the block, that the pistons needed to be milled down due to clearance issues (Diesel) - Cost to repair $120 and additional wait period because this was realized during assembly2.) Crank journal @ the trust washer / bearing surface was not machined resulting in 'axial runout' meaning there was a unparalleled surface at the trust that would cause premature wearing and/or crank walk. - Cost to repair $120 plus, additional wait time and new thrust bearings - again, one could have only realized this during assembly3.) Deck to cylinder head alignment dowels - this should have been obvious, but when I went to install the heads - taken out to machine but never replaced and reinstalled. $30 and 2 weeks of waiting for them to come in
